MMF Seminar - Understanding Contracts The
NZ Music Managers Forum in association with ((Chart)) hosted music
industry lawyer David McLaughlin on Tuesday 4th September upstairs at
The Dux. David specialises in legal issues as they
relate to the music industry and acts for a wide range of participants
in the music industry both within New Zealand and internationally.
David’s clients include Hollie Smith, Nesian Mystik, Adeaze, 4 Corners
and Tiki from Salmonella Dub. A small but eager group of local managers
were there to hear David's views on the sort of contracts currently
being signed by NZ artists. ((Chart)) features his 'Lawful Truth'
articles and David is also happy to talk to local musicians so contact
him via www.mclaughlinlaw.co.nz.

Dux-de-Lux RoundUp 2007 After two hectic September afternoon heats and some close quarter-final matchups Bang!Bang!Eche!
took out the midget guitar of glory at the Dux-de-Lux RoundUp 2007 on
Sept 29th. The other finalists were Eche!, Fight To Blackout, The
Deceivers and The O'Lovely's (for Myspace links go to www.christchurchmusic.org.nz/artists).
The competition was fierce as it is every year and the bands were
chomping at the bit for the chance to win the prize pool including
their band name being etched onto the midget guitar of glory. ((Chart))
is one of the group of supporters of the Dux-de-Lux RoundUp 2007 and
brought to the prize pack the Chart Featured Artist Profile for October
2007 and 1 years subscription to the NZ Music Managers Forum
(www.mmf.co.nz) with management advice from the Christchurch MMF. For
more on the winners go to bangbangeche.html.

Oxjam: Use your gig to join the party against poverty this October! Throughout October,
Oxfam is coming together with NZ musicians to create Oxjam, a
nationwide month of music with a message: that we can help bring an end
to extreme poverty by making trade fair... And they want YOU to be a
part of it! Across NZ, promoters, venues and musicians are tagging
their gigs as Oxjams and allowing Oxfam campaigners to come along and
gather support from the make Trade Fair campaign. Bands such as Crowded
House, The Black Seeds, Evermore, Fall Out Boy, Little Bushman are
already on board party against poverty. Several ChCh show are lined up
including Young Mothers, Vixen Execution, Yidcore, Odessa, The Have,
Fur Patrol, Rinsed 4th Bday, Happy Palace & Breakin Wreckwordz -
(see gig guide below). For musicians and promoters who want to find out
more, email Eloise at oxjam@oxfam.org.nz or call 09 355 6500 xt. 725. Do what you love doing …Just change the world while you’re doing it!

Southern Amp News In
the countdown to the South Islands largest outdoor festival - Southern
Amp @ AMI Stadium 10 Nov, ((Chart)) is looking forward to hosting
several industry peeps over the weekend, while 3 more acts have been
added to the Christchurch Music Stage....
PUMPKINHEAD – Reforming especially for Southern Amp 2 this iconic Christchurch
rock band with be playing their first full show since 1996, almost
exactly 11 years ago to the day! Pumpkinhead’s 1995 album “Sloth” may
still be the loudest piece of music to come out of New Zealand!
PUMPKINHEAD reinvented the two minute-something song with their
grunge-strained, high crunch factor pop. They toured nationally,
supported and played with Shihad, Supergroove, opened for Faith No More
on both their NZ tours, supported Fugazi, Primus and played the BIG DAY
OUT in 1995 and 1996! For a slice of pure NZ rock history, DO NOT miss
this monster of Christchurch music-past at Southern Amp 2.
NEIL ROBINSON
– three completely unsupervised teenagers, the band was formed in
honour of a national treasure of the same name in 2006. Neil Robinson
combine melt-in-the-mouth pop tunes with wild, almost inappropriate,
energy and a live show that's bound to want to make your girlfriend
dump you!
BANG! BANG! ECHE!
– Winners of the 2007 RDU FM Round-Up band competition this weekend
past at the famous Dux de Lux in Christchurch earned themselves the
unparalleled distinction of opening the first ever Christchurch Music
Stage at Southern Amp 2! Previous SmokefreeRockquest finalists Bang!
Bang! Eche! are 2 girls, 4 guys, lots of colour, playing a mix of
house, post punk new wave & J-pop. Think of Flying Lizards, B52’s
and you’re not far off… So the full & final Christchurch Music Industry Stage line-up is – PUMPKINHEAD,
GASOLINE COWBOY, 4MANBOB, HEAVY JONES, CHARLIE ASH, BAND THEFT AUTO,
NEIL ROBINSON, TAINTED, ED MUZIK, THE TIGER TONES, FLYING SOLO, THE
UNDERCURRENTS, THE ENRIGHT HOUSE, RAGAMUFFIN CHILDREN, MUSTARD, JOHN
WHITE, ANDY GIBSON, THE EASTERN, TRILLION BAND and BANG! BANG! ECHE!
She'll Be Right Records will also be holding a Festival warmup gig at the Loons, Lyttelton on Friday, Nov 9 (see www.shellberightrecords.co.nz). More details on the festival are at www.southernamp.co.nz and www.christchurchmusic.org.nz/pre-amp07.
Website - Phase III Update Over
the coming months we'll be working on the new look ((Chart)) website.
After a year in operation and and uploading a truckload of content its
time to let you - the music community - create your own profiles,
upload digital flyers, customise your gig guide, see 3D venue maps,
ChCh music history and much more. We'll let you know more as it
progresses, stay tuned!

Record
label LucidBruce Music tell us that prog-rockers The Bob Lazar Story
have finally assembled a four or five piece (depending on availabilty
and schedules) including Mike Fudakowski on Bass, Kevin Roberts on
drums and Ross Devereux on sax. They have been busy writing booking
gigs from November to coincide with the release of their 6 track EP.
Atlas
are playing at the Tuis this month and are up for breakthrough artist
with Liam Finn and Hollie Smith. They have released their next single
'Magic 8' to radio and their album is due out in November too.
Dukes
have announced a change in management with Lorraine Barry (Lorraine
Barry Music Management & Marketing) taking over from Freedom
Preston-Clark (Belle Star Management). Freedom's work in helping Dukes
become such a success has been instrumental and we wish the band all
the best under Lorraine's expertise and experience.

Tristan and Sam of the Poplar Lane drum'n'bass retail shop Static
Records have decided not to renew the lease so will be closing down on
the 6th of October. They would like to thank you everyone for the
support over the last 2 years and much of their stock is on sale but be
quick, first in first served.
Rehearsal Room Survey Needs Your Input! Suitable rehearsal rooms
have been severely lacking in Christchurch and ((Chart)) has been
working with several local groups to try and find such facilities.
Practice room 'activist' Wayde Buttimore has started some market
research and is asking for ChCh bands/artists to take 2 quick minutes
and fill out the following online survey. This will help Wayde by
providing some solid evidence of the need for rehearsal facilities in
Christchurch... so go to Rehearsal Space Survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=48jUTbnyu9qKdQ8JICKfzQ_3d_3d
We will let you know the results asap! In the meantime, ((Chart))
has started a Rehearsal Rooms Directory so if you know of any available
go to www.christchurchmusic.org.nz/rehearsal-rooms.
Other Music News

Victoria and Albertine's Silver Jubilee (c/o Scott Kara, nzherald.co.nz) There
were two big winners at last night's APRA Silver Scroll - New Zealand's
top songwriting award - and both have girls to thank for their
inspiration. Brooke Fraser's song Albertine, about an orphan girl from
Rwanda, won this year's top prize at the ceremony at Auckland Town
Hall. The Sydney-based singer-songwriter wrote the song after meeting
Albertine during a 2005 trip to Rwanda. Meanwhile, former Dance
Exponents frontman Jordan Luck, whose 1982 breakthrough hit was
Victoria, became the first inductee into the New Zealand Music Hall of
Fame. Luck said last night: "I was sitting there hearing about this
prestigious award and I thought I might nip in there in 2030 or
something. Flip, I'm just a stunned mullet." (more on this story at www.christchurchmusic.org.nz/apra-winners-2007)
BDO Rumours Word
on the street is that Rage Against The Machine will be headlining the
2008 Big Day Out and also perhaps CSS, Arcade Fire, The Klaxons, New
Young Pony Club, Foo Fighters, Enter Shakiri,The Flaming Lips and
Queens of the Stoneage. The first official announcement is 9am 2nd
October (see stuff.co.nz for the announcement).

Great Escape Is Looking For Bands In just two years, The Great Escape
has established itself both as the leading event in Europe for
showcasing new talent from around the world, and as one of the most
exciting events on the festival calendar. The Great Escape 2006 saw The
Fratellis, The Klaxons, The Kooks and The Gossip go on to sell millions
of records. Highlights of The Great Escape 2007 were Jack Penate,
Patrick Watson, The Maccabees, The Pigeon Detectives and Kate Nash,
with Brighton’s larger capacity venues on board showcasing even bigger
bands than the previous year. The event sold out in advance. In 2008
ChCh music stalwart Cary Caldwell is helping run the festival and is on the lookout for NZ bands (more on this story at www.christchurchmusic.org.nz/GreatEscape-release-sept07).

Featured Artist - Bang! Bang! Eche!

Previous SmokeFreeRockquest finalists Bang! Bang! Eche! are 2 girls, 4
guys, lots of colour, playing a mix of house, post punk new wave &
J-pop. Think of Flying Lizards meets the B52’s and you are close... As
winners of the 2007 RDU98.5FM RoundUp band competition at the famous
Dux de Lux in late September these young post punk ravers play an
exciting brand of electro-pop, and appeared on the all-ages scene in
2007 with their home-recorded MySpace single 'Nikee' following up with
numerous live shows, including a wildcard entry in the
SmokeFreeRockquest Canterbury regional finals. (go to bangbangeche.html for more).
Recent Releases

The Shocking Pinks - Shocking Pinks (Album) (Flying Nun/DFA)
"We're
in love with DFA's new signing. Like Thurston Moore conducting the
Jesus & Mary Chain Philharmonic Alt. Orchestra."- NME. A
compilation of remastered tunes from The Shocking Pinks' two 2005
albums for Flying Nun Records, Mathmatical Warfare and Infinity Land.
This is Nick Harte's first effort on hip New York label DFA, the songs
have gained an extra sheen thanks to some remixing for and mastering at
Abbey Road (c/o amplifier.co.nz). Pitchforkmedia.com gives this release an 8.3 and recommended!

Salmonella Dub - Heal Me (Limited Edition Bonus CD Version) (Salmonella Dub Recordings/EMI)
Since
the release of 2003's 'One Drop East' (their last album proper),
Salmonella Dub have left us hanging - teasing us periodically with the
odd remix album or rarity compilation. Now after four years, the wait
is finally over - an album of all new Salmonella Dub material is here!
The 'Dub are pioneers of the NZ's healthy Live Roots/Dub scene, forming
in Christchurch in 1992. 'Heal Me' is their sixth album and from
opening track 'Watching It Rain' it's clear why these guys are still
considered the leaders of pack. 'Heal Me' is the band's sixth album and
is by far their most vocally lush to date. In fact it would be fair to
call this their fully-fledged vocal album without lacking any of the
rich texturing or Dub atmospherics of their earlier, more instrumental
work. Fear not, those Salmonella Dub hallmarks we all know and love are
still in full effect; big wide open spaces where horns and guitars dart
back and forth and of course great big bottom-end! (c/o smokecds.com)

Scribe - Rhyme Book (Dirty Records)
Four
years in the making, Scribe returns with his second album, opening up
the pages of his much guarded rhyme book to reveal the gift and the
curse that came with the phenomenal success of The Crusader and to mark
out his next moves. When the smoke cleared on an album that ate up
territories on both sides of the Tasman and set the stage for bigger
conquests, Scribe retreated from the glare of media attention to his
Christchurch home.
Here he raised his newborn baby daughter
and isolated himself in a one window basement with a pad and a pen and
a pile of beat tapes sourced from New Zealand to New York. On Rhyme
Book Scribe dips into four years of the highs and lows of The Crusader
and back in time to a life where hip hop music was an only escape. From
there he looks outwards, ready to recapture the hearts and minds of an
international audience. Brizzy and Wollongong now roll off Scribe's
million dollar tongue like his home town did on his debut. This time
round, Scribe's voice is the choice of a generation and he has stepped
up to speak to it (c/o amplifier.co.nz).
 The L.E.D.S - Rumba (Video)
Rumba
is the second single taken from the acclaimed debut album ...we are the
L.E.D.S. Now there was a time when it seemed every video made by New
Zealand bands featured a car. In the spirit of reducing ones carbon
footprint, perhaps, the L.E.D.S have opted for more traditional
transport. Cycle fuelled pop made by machines and people (c/o
amplifier.co.nz)

The Enright House - Dark Wave = MC Squared (Video) (A Low Hum/Border)
Post rock experimentalists The Enright House have just released the long awaited video to "Darkwave = MC Squared" at www.darkwaveequalsmcsquared.com and at www.myspace.com/theenrighthouse.
The video features some incredible cinematography created by Lauren
Simpson and Michael Losure at the Texas A&M Vizlab in the US.
