((Chart)) - The Christchurch Music Industry Trust is a focal point and portal for the Christchurch music industry and acts as a support and advice network for musicians as well as promoting the city’s vibrant music scene.

((Chart)) was was established in late 2005 by a group of local music stalwarts and recent Christchurch returnees, armed with national and international experience in the music industry who combined forces to voluntarily help build the capability of the music community in Christchurch.

((Chart)) was incorporated as a Charitable Trust in March 2006 and since then has been acting as a support and advisory network undertaking projects that are strategically focused on Infrastructure, Promotion, Live Performance, Training, Quality Product, Support Services and Technology aspects of the local music
industry.

Since July 2006, www.christchurchmusic.org.nz has received over 500,000 page views and regularly gets over 700 visitors a day from NZ and around the world.

Myspace Maps

We have collected the city’s artists, venues, studios, music schools, labels and much more in a comprehensive database, listed thousands of gigs, staged and supported a several successful music industry and live events. We list job opportunities and a self-help resource of links to all aspects of the music industry. We have been a national and international voice for Christchurch music and are excited about the future of the industry in this famous breeding ground of musical talent.

Why Are We Here?

((Chart)) is the result of a process which started in 2004, initiated by the CDC who were researching the needs of the local creative industries and identified the music industry as one of the strongest industries. Through a consultation process involving Christchurch musicians, venue owners, promoters, etc specific barriers were highlighted restricting the progression of local artists. Being economically neutral, a charitable trust governed by experienced industry people was deemed to be the ideal vehicle for strengthening the Christchurch music community.

Who Are We?

((Chart)) is made up of people who are passionate about music in Christchurch. A dedicated ((Chart)) music manager and volunteers who represent all facets of the music industry - musicians, independent labels, promoters, managers, video producers, educators, media and radio representatives:

Music Editor of The Christchurch Press.

Vicki_Anderson_small.jpg

Vicki Anderson is the Music Editor of the South Island's largest daily newspaper, The Press, where she has worked for over 15 years because it's a fantastic place to work. She is passionate about New Zealand music and her favourite Kiwi acts include Shihad, Shaky Hands, HLAH, Shapeshifter, The Bats and many, many, many more. Jordan Luck sang Victoria to her on her 25th birthday at the Methven pub _ it doesn't get more Kiwi than that. She likes walking on the beach (as long as there are no leg-humping unleashed dogs also out for a stroll), whiskers on kittens and the brief thrill she gets when the word 'accepted' comes up when she uses Eftpos.

Record Label Director (She’ll Be Right),  Engineer & Record Producer, Musician (Trillion/Dark Tower).

jody_lloyd.jpgJody Lloyd is a Rapper/Songwriter/Record Label Director/Poet/Beats Guy/Producer and founding member of hip hop duo Dark Tower and more recently, the solo recording project 'Trillion' and the live five piece 'The Trillion Band'. He is also the guy who brought you (among other things) the critically acclaimed Shadows on a Flat Land in 1998.

Jody has worked on recording projects with many well known musicians including Dave Dobbyn, DLT, The Brunettes, Jeremy Taylor and SJD. Dark Tower's album Canterbury Drafts was nominated alongside Che Fu for best hip hop album at the 2001 NZ Tui NZ Music Awards. Over the last fifteen years Jody has performed hundreds of times, from small bars and cafes to concert and festival crowds of thousands, most recently exposing his unique brand of NZ hip hop to crowds in Australia.

As founder of She'll Be Right Records - home of Dark Tower, Trillion, Lindon Puffin, Duff, Jeremy Taylor, John White, Bazuki Joe, Billy Wilson, St Lucy and new recruits Le Mot Cafe and Sam Hopley, Jody Lloyd's music has been included in numerous compilation albums and with the help of his label mates has released over twenty albums, making She'll Be Right Records one of the largest active Christchurch based independents. As no stranger to journalism, Jody is currently a contract producer for Radio NZ producing music based documentaries in Christchurch, a position he has held since October 2003. His writing has been published in RipItUp and his lyrics and poetry published in the Catalyst poetry journals.

Jody's natural aim whilst creating and choosing music to release, is to think ahead, challenge norms and stretch boundaries, which in turn creates interest and stimulates debate. In an era, when people seem to be lapping up American sounding local music Jody stands firm on these morals and won't be swayed. Jody Lloyd has a strong conviction (evident in his music) to always 'keep it honest and keep it kiwi'.

After many years in Auckland and a stint in UK, Jody has returned to his hometown of Christchurch to continue with his passion of creating, performing and releasing excellent local music.

Support

((Chart)) has some influential and keen supporters:

Brent HansenPatron of CHART
Brent was Christchurch born and raised before a career in journalism and the music industry took him to the Presidency of MTV Networks in Europe and Editor-in-Chief MTV Networks International. Brent’s acceptance of the Patronage is his endorsement of the value of the goals and objectives of the Trust.

Garry MooreMayor of Christchurch has given his endorsement to CHART as he sees the value to a city in actively supporting its creative musical talent.

Hayley WestenraChristchurch born Multi-platinum selling International Artist
“Growing up in Christchurch really gave me a solid grounding as a performer and singer with the help of numerous opportunities to develop my art. It’s a city full of extremely talented individuals with so much potential – we just need to make sure we’re giving every one of them as much help and support as we can so they can make our city proud.”

Scribe Christchurch born Multi-platinum selling International Artist
"An organization like Chart is going to make a big difference to the young musicians here in Christchurch.  They don't have to go all the way to Auckland to find out how the industry works, ask for advice or get help - they can now do all that at home. It will be a massive help for musicians who just want to stay in Christchurch."

Cath AndersenGeneral Manager, New Zealand Music Industry Commission
"It makes perfect sense that people who have worked successfully in the music industry in Christchurch are the ones offering advice to the city's musicians, managers, promoters and anyone else trying to start a career in music locally. CHART will be better equipped to do this than industry people from other major centres who know very little about the city's local scene. The function that CHART will perform is similar to what the NZMIC (New Zealand Music Industry Commission) undertakes in advising its artists to get out and do what they need to get done but come back and return those experiences to their own creative city".

Ross HerrickManager of the Dux-de-Lux, Christchurch’s longest running original music venue.
To quote Ross, “It would be my absolute pleasure to endorse CHART as I feel very strongly that Christchurch needs this sort of guiding force.”

Flip GraterDeveloping local Artist/Maiden Records
“If a local industry is to develop then it needs practical assistance from grassroots to high end levels and in this I see Chart as essential towards this development.”
