Well its August and the the Christchurch Arts Festival is in full swing and we have some tickets to giveaway to various Christchurch artists shows including Throwing Shapes, Lauren Mitchell and Solaa w/ Oakley Grenell's Departure Lounge. This month in town lookout for shows from the Raggamuffin Children (July's Featured Artist), Pine, Live'N'Lie, The Transistors, Minuit, Johnny Possum and Happy Palace.

Shapeshifter Workshop - Weds, 1 Aug
Drum'n'Bass guru's Shapeshifter have just completed a successful Australian May/June tour, headlining their own bills, with sold out shows and a performance at the Ministry of Sound festival in Perth. ((Chart)) and Vision College are proud to present a production and performance based workshop

Southern Amp 2 Further Main Acts Announced

Already announced on the Rock Main Stage at Jade Stadium, Sat Nov 10 are SHIHAD / THE BLACK SEEDS / ATLAS / OPSHOP / DUKES and THE VALVES. Joining them between 11.00am 10.30pm will be... EVERMORE, THIRSTY MERC, THE VEILS and dDUB. The Ministry of Sound stage is the most recognisable dance music brand in the world and will host their own stage once again at Southern Amp 2 enclosed in a specially constructed "super-marquee" featuring some of the best NZ & Australian club acts.

Already announced on The Ministry Of Sound Stage are CONCORD DAWN with MC TIKI / LADI 6 / KID KENOBI & MC SHURESHOCK / JOHN COURSE / GOODWILL and OB1. MMF Seminar On Music Industry Basics
Last night the ChCh Music Managers Forum hosted Lynda Parsons – Entertainment Accounting Services, Petrina George - APRA‘s Manager of Member Services and Dean Cameron - RIANZ RAP Fund Manager at the Dux Lounge. MMF Members discussed setting up a company, GST, Tax, APRA and the RAP Fund.

Urban Notion Touring Europe In August

Christchurch-based drum n' bass producers Urban Notion, who have a number of tracks forthcoming and released on international labels, are heading overseas on a tour of Europe in August. The tour was organised following a booking at prestigious London club The End on August 24th. Urban Notion had their first single On The Southbound / Tora Bora released at the end of April on Total Science's UK- based label Advanced Recordings (released on 12" vinyl and digital download). They have music forthcoming on London-based label Progress Ltd and Goldie's label Rufige (sister label to Metalheadz), further releases on Advanced, and a single recently signed to German based Phunkfiction recordings. The crew have been building their profile in and around New Zealand over the past 5 years and have also performed in the USA, Japan, Thailand and Australia.

Local Artists Feature at the ChCh Arts Festival
The Christchurch Arts Festival has kicked off and this time round presents a broad and bold programme of high quality arts events targeting the residents and visitors of Christchurch. Around 70 to 80-percent of the programme is NZ-sourced, with a special emphasis on showcasing landmark NZ performance and exhibitions. This year the festival features an interesting mix of Christchurch musicians including...

Throwing Shapes - Fri 3 Aug, 9pm, $20, TelstraClear Club, Cathedral Square.
Throwing Shapes is Christchurch’s hottest alt-country act, with an emphasis on mellow acoustic styles. The musicians comprising Throwing Shapes include Flip Grater, Matt Barus, Tim Chesney, Lauren Mitchell, Jody Lloyd, Matt Allcutt and Adam McGrath. The band has an emphasis on musical fusion, with influences including pop, melancholic country, folk, rock and jazz. This performance transform the after dark slot with mellow playing by this collective of hot young things.

Lauren Mitchell is a graduate of the Christchurch Jazz School who is rapidly establishing a career as a singer of extraordinary talent and presence. Her performances have included festivals across Australia and NZ, Coca Cola Christmas in the Park, and performing with Dukes as support act to the 2006 INXS tour. The 2007 Christchurch Arts Festival will host the launch of her debut CD.

Soulful grooves, solid rhythms and smooth guitar playing are the trademarks of local Christchurch band Tribalincs. With a unique and exciting style encompassing jazz, soul, gospel and rock, they have created a real ‘pasifika’ sound with their original compositions. expressing their passion for life through their music, these talented musicians sing and play as they love to live.

Solaa w/ Oakley Grenell Presents Departure Lounge - Fri 10 Aug, 9pm, $25, TelstraClear Club, Cathedral Square.
Solaa formed during 1997 in the spirit of jazz improvisation. The sound they developed was a unique New Zealand fusion of electronic and organic music. Rich in instrumentation, the music of Solaa splices hiphop, Breaks, Funk, Soul, R’n’B, and Latin Flavours. Support from Oakley Grennel's Departure Lounge.

The Cookbook Tour 2007 By Flip Grater

In 2006 singer-songwriter Flip Grater went on an epic tour of New Zealand to promote her debut album Cage For A Song. Travelling the length and breadth of the country in her trusty 1988 Lada station wagon, she sang for her supper in small towns and big cities, blagging  accommodation, food and – most importantly – recipes along the way. With a cast of unusual characters, this book is the ultimate cookbook-slash-tour diary, and a snapshot of Kiwi subculture punctuated by 47 delicious recipes.  Flip has created a book that explores and celebrates music, food, travel and a woman’s relationship with her car. The book is being self-published by Flip through her own label, Maiden Records and is being launched AUGUST 10th. The Cookbook Tour will be available online through www.thecookbooktour.com, and kicks off in August starting at Fat Eddies with Trillion & Minisnap on Tues, 14th August, 6pm.

APRA Announces Top 20 Songs Of The Year

The Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA) has announced the top 20 songs eligible for New Zealand’s most prestigious songwriting award - The APRA Silver Scroll. The 2007 finalists include Sean Cunningham, Ben Campbell and Beth Campbell from Atlas with their recent no.1 hit 'Crawl'. Historically, a panel of anonymous writers and industry experts has judged the Silver Scroll but this year, a significant change has occurred in determining the winner. A panel of judges were  nominated by APRA to convene the preliminary list, and then is over to  APRA members who can listen to each song, read the lyrics and log on to vote. The 5 finalists  are performed on the night of the Awards on Tues, 18th Sept and the winner of the Silver Scroll 2007 will be announced.

Mushroom Music NZ Signs Solaa

Mushroom Music Publishing New Zealand recently signed the funk, soul, hip hop fusion supergroup Solaa. Songwriters Isaac Aesili, Dave Wright and Kurt Dyer join a diverse catalogue of NZ songwriters such as SJD, Scribe, Liam Finn, The Mint Chicks, Elemeno P, James Milne, The Feelers, Anika Moa, Tim Finn, Salmonella Dub, Nathan Haines, Neil Finn, King Kapisi, Die! Die! Die! amongst others. Released in 2006, Solaa's debut album 'Steps In Time' was a critical and commercial success, with their single Sylphlike reaching number one on NZ alternative radio. Solaa have garnered love from across the globe, with Sylphlike and the stunning vox-led Chance being picked up on BBC's 1Xtra.  Chance and Eyes Shut were also playlisted on XM Satellite Radio which reaches across North America.

Shocking Pinks Release Single On DFA

Shocking Pinks (aka Nick Harte) has recently been picked up by the US label DFA, home to the LCD Soundsystem, the Juan Maclean, Hot Chip and former home of the Rapture. The Pinks' debut 12" single on DFA entitled Smokescreen, with a remix from Belgian duo the Glimmers has just been released and is the single of the month in both DJ Magazine and Mixmag. The first pressing sold out pretty much immediately and the second run was in production according to a recent report on the DFA website. The track is taken from the Shocking Pinks' forthcoming debut self titled album for DFA, which is due out in America on September 25 and elsewhere in the world on September 17 via EMI. Flying Nun Records will be releasing it in New Zealand & Australia.

Christchurch-based singer/songwriter & TV/film composer Glyn MacLean, with the support of Auckland music industry specialist laywer David McLaughlin has just negotiated and signed two of the NZ Music Industry's most lucrative deals this decade. Shapeshifter Aug/Sept Tour
Shapeshifter, voted New Zealand's best live act, is back on the road performing the electric and cutting edge set they are known and loved for. To top this off they are releasing their first live album with tracks from last year's epic orchestra tour. 'Shapeshifter Live' is out 20 August and from the 30th of August the band are touring the country to celebrate including 2 Christchurch shows at The Civic in September.

LUMA's Annual Gig Needs You!

The Linwood Urban Music Academy (LUMA) are holding their annual live music event on Sat, Aug 25th at Al's Bar. Traditionally a stepping stone for many ChCh acts, this year's LUMA gig features 2006 Rockquest kings Neil Robinson who are looking to tear the house down with support from indie pop princesses The O’Lovelys, and underground princes of darkness Undermingus! NZTE NZ Music Sampler

Local brand Dirty Habit will be playing their first gig together in Auckland on 11th August and co-founder Yuhei Kubo whose recent remix of Greg Churchills 'Mulcha' was signed to international label Cosmonote Blue will also be appearing with the Dirty Habit crew at Asta next week. Yuhei Kubo, Toby Bradley and Ryan Lott will be heading to Auckland for SKANK! Vs Dirty Habit. Look out for Yuhei Kubo in the Ministry of Sound Tent at Southern Amp in November.

IMNZ ChCh News
Pig Out have played their final New Zealand shows of 2007 before leaving for Europe. This was Pig Out's 10th tour since forming in February 2006, and James Duncan (Dimmer/SJD/Punches) took on bass duties for the tour. Pig Out's first European date will be the MIDI Festival in the south of France with Animal Collective, Thieves Like Us and Radio Dept.
Flip Grater's label Maiden Records presents a new signing: the new album from Wellington artist Urbantramper, Tokon and The Colours and is in stores August 1st.

Txttunes Launches US Site

Kiwi mobile music start-up Txttunes today switched on its US counter-part, Txttunes.com, as it embarks on an ambitious plan to compete for a share of the American digital music market. The California-based portal will begin offering independent artists and record labels an opportunity to sell their music direct to fans in the US using text-messaging. Txttunes enables fans to purchase DRM-free mp3 digital downloads by txt-ing a code to a number then having the purchase price debited to their mobile phone account.

A delightful blend of new folk with soulful melodies, the Raggamuffin Children's debut album 'Werecat Lullabies' features 12 original songs with an array of instrumentation including cello, clarinet and glockenspiel along with more traditional instruments. Minstrel the singing dog also gets a cameo on the record. August sees their first nationwide tour and coincides with the exciting release of their single 'MORE OF ME' which was recorded after it won a national song writing competition run by LOOP recordings in association with MICROSOFT.

L.A. Mitchell's sparkling new album Debut is released August 13 nationwide, showcasing ten original tracks of empowering and uplifting soul. With jazz-inspired tones, her vocal prowess is in demand as backing singer/keys for country rockers Dukes and has recently collaborated with local funk genius Oakley Grennel. This Christchurch School of Jazz graduate has performed live at the 2005 APRA Silver Scroll Awards and Coca Cola Christmas in the Park and with comparisons to Alicia Keyes and Hollie Smith, expect to hear more about this talented lady.
