Music Month, with sales of albums by NZ artists up nearly 30%. Hayley Westenra
held her spot at #1 on the Official NZ Top 40 Albums, extending her
substantial lead over the nearest competition. Radio airplay was up as well, helped by the fact
that Kiwi artists took out the top three spots on the RadioScope100
with the three most-played songs on our airwaves last week with Maybe by OpShop, Shadowfeet by Brooke Fraser and Crawl by Atlas heading off all international rivals. Meanwhile new songs by NZ artists with already proven radio track records including Nothing's More Real by The Feelers made its debut on the RadioScope NZL Top 40 (c/o NZ Musician).

RIANZ Chart Goes Digital The
Official New Zealand Music Chart now represents the full spectrum of
New Zealand music sales, including digital downloads from New Zealand’s
legal, digital music retailers. Until now, The Recording Industry
Association of New Zealand (RIANZ) has compiled The Charts each week
from on the basis of physical music sales and radio play. This week’s
Chart will be the first to reflect legal digital music downloads with
digital sales being counted from Monday May 21st 2007. RIANZ says that
now the market has established a strong digital sales base the changes
are necessary to ensure The Chart continues to reflect how NZers are
buying their music (c/o www.rianz.org.nz).
CokeTunes Closes The Fridge After
almost two years of providing NZers with access to a
huge range of local and international digital downloads,
CokeTunes.co.nz is closing. CokeTunes customers have three months
(until 10 August 07) to use their existing credit. It’s been a great
couple of years, with profits going to the NZ
local music industry through CokeTunes Music Fund grants. Recipients
included Ladi6, who received $15,000 to help produce her debut album,
My Life Story who opened the EdgeFest tour, and The Madison Press who
took away $12,000 worth of gear from the Rock Shop. Coca-Cola is changing its approach to supporting NZ music
with a brand new project which will bring local music directly from the
street to the Kiwi music lover. Checkout www.coke.co.nz for more info.
EMI to offer DRM-free Music EMI
Group has announced a plan to sell its music online without copy
protection technologies, a significant step that will give consumers
greater freedom in the way they can listen to music purchased online.
The music without DRM (digital rights management) technology will also
have a higher audio quality, offering a sound close to that of the
original recordings, according to EMI. But it will also come at a
higher price, with each DRM-free song costing about 20% more than
current downloads. The announcement was made at EMI’s headquarters in
London recently by EMI Group chair Eric Nicoli. He was joined by Steve
Jobs, chief executive officer of Apple, whose iTunes music store will
become the first online retailer to offer the DRM-free music. Jobs said
he will now try to negotiate similar deals with the other three big
music labels, and predicted that half of the 5 million songs available
through iTunes will be available DRM-free by the end of the year. (more...)
Changes at Warners Music NZ (c/o Amplifier.co.nz) Jerry Lloyd General Manager of Warner Music (NZ) has resigned his
position leaving the role he has held since September 2006. Prior to
becoming GM Jerry Lloyd was Sales and Marketing Director and had a long
history of working in and around music retail prior to joining Warner
Music. Jerry oversaw the incorporation of Festival Mushroom Records into
Warner Music after FMR was brought out by Warner Music bringing
the iconic Flying Nun label under the Warner banner – it was Warner Music whom released the wonderful Flying Nun Box Set
late last year. Jerry isn't the only one to have left or is leaving Warner Music, if
this has any bearing on the global rumors of downsizing the staff
levels of the Warner Music empire, we don't know. It sure hasn't been an easy time for the major record companies and
that isn't about to change in the short term. (more...)

Local Releases
Pine - 12 Hour Collision (Arch Hill Recordings)
Twelve Hour Collision is the name of the new Pine
release featuring seven new tracks, as well as two live tracks and two
live videos taken from their extended "House" tour of New Zealand. What
is the 'House" tour you may ask? Perhaps it was a just an excuse for a
recording session, party, video shoot and live gig all rolled into
one...and perhaps you get some of the results on "Twelve Hour
Collision" . Or, perhaps it was a deliberate plan to move away from the
traditional venue, poster, flier, radio kind of thing and bring a more
intimate and personal setting to their shows. Either way, they did this
up and down the country (Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland) and
recorded everything on a portable pro-tools studio and filmed it on
16mm film....part one of this project being Twelve Hour Collision.
Lindon Puffin - Show Pony (Rhythmethod)
Show
Pony is Lindon Puffin’s second solo offering and if you’re wondering
why it’s taken nearly four years to follow up 2003’s ‘Stuff Like That’,
you obviously haven’t been confronted by his infamous feature length
road movie Figure 8000. Aptly named after a drunken punter in
Queenstown heckled that he was a “f**kin show pony, mate” the album
contains 13 original songs that have been described as a collision
between the Warratahs and the Smiths! And while there’s no doubting
Puffin’s vocal prowess, it’s his ability to turn a line that really
stands him apart from his peers and makes this an album to be reckoned
with. “She told me about her plans to put the world at ease and I
missed my chance to slip my hand between her knees” he croons during
the opening track ‘Before the end’. Recorded in a disused basement on
the site of the old Lyttelton gallows with a handful of propa musicians
loosely called the Wild Oats, this is a lush album full of old organs
& banjos, synths & lap steel.
Pig Out - Club Poems (Remastered Version) (Pinacolada Records)
Pig
Out formed in March ‘06 in Christchurch and have quickly gained
notoriety for their intense live shows and unique fusion of house
beats, funk rhythms, pounding techno synth lines and freestyle rave
mc-ing. Pig Out!have delivered a seriously addictive hit of indie
electro pop with ‘Club Poems’. And the remastered version has made the
album sound event better.
 Ariana Tikao - Matariki
Ariana
Tikao is releasing her track "Matariki" to co-incide with Maori New
Year celebrations. It has been described as "strange, but gorgeous" and
"mesmerising" by listeners so far. Listen out for it on National Radio
and Iwi Radio, also by mid June it will be available as a free download
on her myspace (www.myspace.com/arianatikao). Her new album Tuia will
be available at her concert at the Christchurch Arts Festival
