this year was the one-off 'Throwing Shapes' concert. The band consists
of Christchurch musicians Matt Barus (Dukes), Flip
Grater, Lauren Michell, Tim Chesney, Jody Lloyd, Adam McGrath and
others. Throwing Shapes is unique because all eight musicians perform
together on stage, playing each others' acoustic folk, blues, country
and soul-tinged songs. Most songs were written specifically for the
concert. The show featured on National Radio' Musical Chairs show on Aug 25th and the programme was a fly-on-the-wall experience of the project,
from practices and group dynamics, through to the live performance in a
big marquee in Cathedral Square, Christchurch.
Also,
Jody Lloyd was a finalist in NZPEC's Digi Poem Competition for the competition he downloaded a poem written and read by Bill Manhire and added music and production to it

easier for community artists to work with teachers in schools to
support and stimulate arts programmes for students. It is part of the
ongoing development of Arts Online (www.arts.unitec.ac.nz), a

the Ministry of Education by Cognition Consulting Ltd. Café is being

Online - Artists’ Alliance, Dance Aotearoa NZ (DANZ), Music Education

Arts Educators. Arts Online is now inviting community artists
and groups wishing to work on either a commercial or voluntary basis in
schools, to help build Café by completing a profile at arts.unitec.ac.nz/arts-cafe/enter-profile.php.

previous positive feedback from schools is encouraged to be included.

NZ on Air Music Videos, New Recordings
& Radio Hits Music Videos This
is the first Music Video funding round for the 2007/2008 funding year
(commencing 01 July 2007). This funding year, NZ On Air budgeted on
doing 170 music videos - the same as last year. In this first round for
the year, they got 118 applications. Of the 118 applications, 45
projects made it to the first shortlist. They can do 28-29 projects in
each of the six funding rounds this year. In the August round, NZ On
Air will do the full quota of 28 projects. The successful applications
are listed below. Each project will get $5,000 to make a music video.
Decisions are based on the airplay potential of the song and the
strategic value of the music video to the radio airplay campaign.
Airplay potential is measured by first testing the songs with the music
video broadcasters and then we factor in current radio priorities.
· Arch Hill Recordings/Grand Prix/Always Beginning · Arch Hill Recordings/Surf City/Mt Kill. · Broken Records/The Valves/Light It Up · Charlie Ash/Charlie Ash/Ah-Ha · Charta Records/5Star Fallout/The Art Of Being Alone · Coshercot Records/The Coshercot Honeys/We're All Lions · CRS Music/Collapsing Cities/Fear Of Opening My Mouth · Dawn Raid Music/Mareko/Soul Food (The Island Way) · Dirty Records/PNC/Memory Lane · Dirty Records/Scribe/Fresh · Dirty Records/Tiki Taane/Now This Is It · EMI Music/Tim Finn/Still The Song · EMI Music/Anika Moa/Dreams In My Head · EMI Music/Salmonella Dub/Watching It Rain · Graphetti/Pearl/Life Is Beautiful · Illegal Music/Ill Semantics/Take It Slow · International Flannel/International Flannel/Getaway · Odessa/Odessa/Good Enough · Liberation Music/Deja Voodoo/Tracy · Liberation Music/White Birds & Lemons/Secret Drug · Lil' Chief Records/The Brunettes/Obligatory Road Song · Motherland Records/Cornerstone Roots/Home · Rockmelon/Exiles/Blue Is The New · Short Stack Records/Steriogram/Gangster · Sony BMG Music/Brooke Fraser/CS Lewis Song · Soundsmith Records/Hollie Smith/Can't Let You Down · Streetwise Scarlet/Streetwise Scarlet/Take Me Home · Warner Music/48May/Car Crash Weather
New Recordings This
is the first New Recording funding round for the 2007/2008 funding
year. This funding year, like last year, NZ On Air are planning on
funding 20 New Recording projects at $10,000 each - $5,000 to record a
radio single and an additional (conditional) $5,000 for a music video
to support the release of the song to radio. That means that they are
looking for just five projects in each of the four funding rounds in
this funding year. In this first funding round for the new year, they
got 160 applications. The first shortlisting gave us 32 songs, the
second reduced the number of contenders to 27 and the third produced
the final ten. Each of the final ten was then invited to present more
information about the project and their plans for the song. The five
projects with the best combination of commercial radio airplay
potential and a convincing plan for the recording, release and
promotion of the song get the $10,000 new artist funding package. The
five successful projects from the August round are -
· The Great Escape by Audio Empire · Circles by Exiles · What I Need by The New Freedom · Under The Shadows by These Four Walls · (You) Cut Me Deep by Tyra Hammond & The Tornadoes
Radio Hits Based
on airplay in the April/June 2007 quarter. In this Radio Hits funding
round, NZ On Air will do the usual five projects. The five that they
will do this time are songs that have picked up significant airplay on
radio in the second quarter of 2007. Each project will get $5,000 (or
the actual cost of recording and releasing the single, whichever is the
lesser). Decisions are based on analysing the RadioScope airplay
charts, which are in turn based on airplay returns from 146 radio
stations around the country. However, songs that have picked up
significant airplay in this quarter but have already been funded via
the Phase Four Album or New Recordings schemes are not also eligible
for Radio Hits funding.
· Crazy? Yes! Dumb? No! by The Mint Chicks (Flying Nun) · Electric Dream by Shapeshifter (Truetone) · Second Chance by Liam Finn (Liberation) · Her Hairagami Set by The Brunettes (Lil' Chief) · Would You Mind? by Tyree (Move The Crowd)

Recent Releases

The Enright House - A Maze And Amazement (Album) (A Low Hum/Border)
The Enright House are a band you'll struggle to pigeon-hole. At times
reminiscent of God Speed You! Black Emperor, other times more at home
with the indie pop stylings of Death Cab for Cutie, moments of Sigur
Ros, a sprinkling of the Postal Service, throw into that mix a sound
that is only theirs and you have a seriously epic record. The Enright
House is out in Stores in October through A Low Hum/Border, or get a
copy on The Craftwerk Tour (see ALowHum for dates) or be at Al's Bar on Sept 22nd to get your copy.

Black Market Art - Kids (Album) (Self-released)
Kids is title of the upcoming 10-track debut of indie-pop
songsters Black Market Art. Utilizing the studio to its fullest with
the help of engineer Jules Marchant, the first half of Kids shows
an eclectically orchestrated Black Market Art, songs sprinkled
with flavours of flugal horn, glockenspiel and harpsichord, among many
others. The second half of the album captures the band's live sense of
raw fun and sponteniety, with four tracks recorded by
local band-pie-fingerer Marcus Winstanley of The Undercurrents and
Minisnap.

Shapeshifter - Shapeshifter Live (Album) (Truetone)
Shapeshifter
Live was recorded on 29th Sept 2006 at the Christchurch Town Hall – the
final show of their orchestra tour and in the band's hometown – with
all the strings on the tracks arranged by Victoria Kelly and performed
with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marc Taddei.
Shapeshifter Live is an exciting new album which encapsulates the
essence, energy and vitality of NZ's top live act, and features hits
from all three of their studio albums, including When I Return,
Tapestry and Bring Change. These shows sold out well in advance and the
fusion between the orchestras and Shapeshifter created an electric
atmosphere, which thousands of lucky punters eagerly lapped up. The
recording on the night was captured by Andre Upston and then mixed by
longtime Shapeshifter associate/soundman and Salmonella Dub frontman,
Tiki Taane, Shapeshifter's Sam Trevethick and Andre Upston (c/o
Amplifier.co.nz).

Tiki Taane - Past, Present, Future (Album) (Tikidub Productions / Dirty Records)
Tangaroa
is the hard-hitting new offering from Tiki Taane, and first single from
the former Salmonella Dub-ster's forthcoming debut solo album 'Past,
Present, Future'. Inspired by the raw energy and power of Tangaroa, God
of the Sea, Taane delivers a haunting, genre-defying piece of art that
confronts the past to pave the way for the future. Tangaroa contrasts
Taane's trademark bass-heavy production with traditional Maori
instrumentation, depicting the struggle between humans and their
environment, the tensions of race and culture and the need to balance
respect for the past with optimism for the future. The 'Tangaroa EP'
(including remixes of Tangaroa by Pots and Sam Bora) will be available
instores and online on September 3rd.

Charlie Ash - Blood Red Sleeve (Video)
Blood
Red Sleeve is an Electro-Rocker with angst and the vocal "won't you
come inside and meet the family" has almost a scary tone to it. It
demands attention and repeated listening, to feel the Charlie Ash
'Chainsaw Massacre' vibe. Catch them at Southern Amp on the
((Chart))/RDU98.5FM Stage, AMI Stadium, Nov 10th.

Minuit - Except You Remixes (EP) (Tardus Music)
Four
new Minuit remixes coming from Funk'n'SloCuts, LBJ, Give Me A C! and
Simon Flower. Except You from their debut album The 88 gets a stormer
remix by Berliner LBJ, a breakbeat groover by Funk'n'SloCuts, and an
indie elecrokitschnwhizz mix by Gimme a C! As a added bonus there's a
remix of Sum Of Us from their latest album by Simon Flower (c/o
amplifier.co.nz)
Trillion – Lonely Road (Video) (She'll Be Right Records) Shot in one take near Diamond Harbour by Rick Harvie. The song features a vocal line from
Flip Grater and
Delaney Davidson on lap steel. Lonely Road is the first song to be taken from the New Trillion album
SILENTinvisible, which is now complete after
2.5 years of working on it. the Album is in mastering. Look out for a mid to late October release. Brand New Video clip here www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAWT_unnoRE
Shocking Pinks DFA Debut Finally, Flying Nun have announced that DFA's
Shocking Pink's self titled debut will be released on 25 September. The
album will be a merger and re-mastering of The Shocking Pink's previous
two albums. A full tracklisting can be found at www.flyingnun.co.nz and
hints of forthcoming remixes from Deerhunter, The Glimmers, Arkityp,
and Eluvium (c/o cheeseontoast.co.nz)
