NZ Music Commission in conjunction with NZ Music Managers Forum and NZ On Air announce NZ Music Month Seminars - ‘Getting NZ Music Overseas’
This
year’s NZ Music Month seminars will be tackling the question on every
NZ band’s lips – ‘how do I get my music overseas?’. A panel of
experienced speakers who have had international experience will share
their experience and give advice in a series of seminars that will
travel to 4 national centres.
The Christchurch seminar will feature: David Benge – MD of Australian label Speak ‘n’ Spell, manager of Cut Off Your Hands and Fur Patrol Tom Dalton – Manager for The Datsuns, Jakob, Pluto and Anika Moa Brendan Smyth –NZ On Air Music Manager Gary Fortune – International Manager at NZ Music Commission Cath Andersen – General Manager of NZ Music Commission
The sessions will be chaired by Teresa Patterson – Manager for Scribe, Blindspott, Elemeno P, Carly Binding and The Have. Topics to be covered include:
1. The first step – who, what, where, how? Who do we speak to, what do we do, where do we go, how do we go about doing this? 2. Overseas touring – how is this done? 3. Trade shows/conferences – are these worth the expense? (SXSW/Midem/CMJ/Popkomm/Muse Expo etc) 4. Funding – what funding is available
All the seminars are FREE. MMF members will have the opportunity to meet the speakers for exclusive one on one sessions.

David Benge Started out working as campus activities co-ordinator for VIC uni doing O week and the like. Quit to work with Fur Patrol full time. Moved to OZ with the band. Started a publishing/touring/record label company called Speak n Spell. Currently doing management for Fur Patrol and Cut Off Your Hands and running/own Speak n Spell with another couple of guys who are based in Sydney.
Speak n Spell works with: Cut Off Your Hands, Editors, The Dears, The Walkmen, Four Tet, Midlake, The Horrors, Die Die Die to name a few...
Tom Dalton Artist Manager for the Datsuns & Jakob plus recent signings Pluto & Anika Moa. Worked on overseas tours for with Die Die Die, Connan & the Mockasins and more recently So So Modern. Released a split 7” of High Dependency Unit / Die Die Die through own label - Shoot The Freak. Started a small merchandise business servicing international bands - Swagger.
Brendan Smyth – NZ On Air Brendan manages NZ On Air's programmes to support the making and marketing of NZ music. He is responsible for the funding of music videos, the production of the NZ On Air hit discs that go out to radio stations, funding NZ music programmes that play on commercial radio and on the b.net student radio stations as well as the Phase Four and Phase Five funding and promotional strategies
Cath Andersen/Gary Fortune – NZ Music Commission The New Zealand Music Commission (NZMIC) is one of the Government funded arts agencies, and is committed to growing NZ music business, both at home and overseas. Financially supported through the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, the NZMIC undertakes projects and partnerships that are strategically about getting New Zealand music out into the world and assisting music businesses in working better. ‘Outward Sound’ is the name of the NZMIC International Division. It focuses primarily on international music market development and works with individual artists’ business managers.
