((Chart)) Christchurch Music Industry Trust

AT A GLANCE

CHART - The Christchurch Music Industry Trust is music industry representative body for contemporary popular music in Christchurch. With a dedicated manager and a Board made up of passionate local music advocates with extensive industry experience, CHART acts as a support and advice network for the Christchurch music industry. CHART hosts regular professional development events, live music showcases, seminars and workshops and manages www.christchurchmusic.org.nz - a web portal promoting the Christchurch music industry and showcasing the city’s vibrant music scene.

CHART 's beginnings started in late 2005 when a group of local music stalwarts and recent Christchurch returnees, armed with national and international experience in the music industry who combined forces to voluntarily help build the capability of the music community in Christchurch.

CHART was incorporated as a Charitable Trust in April 2006 and since then has been acting as a support and advisory network undertaking projects that are strategically focused on Infrastructure, Promotion, Live Performance, Training, Quality Product, Support Services and Technology aspects of the local music industry.

Since July 2006, www.christchurchmusic.org.nz gets regular visitors and requests from NZ and around the world.

Myspace MapsWe have collected the city’s artists, venues, studios, music schools, labels and much more in a comprehensive database, listed thousands of gigs, staged and supported a several successful music industry and live events. We list job opportunities and a self-help resource of links to all aspects of the music industry. We have been a national and international voice for Christchurch music and are excited about the future of the industry in this famous breeding ground of musical talent.

WHY ARE WE HERE?

In 2002 the Canterbury Development Corporation (CDC) began researching the Christchurch creative industries sector and in consultation with the music sector revealed significant growth opportunities and capability that had already resulted in Christchurch artists such as Scribe, Hayley Westenra, Bic Runga, Anika Moa, Julia Deans and bands such as The Feelers, Shapeshifter and Zed achieving success both nationally and internationally. Some of these Christchurch artists have created history: Scribe is the first NZ artist to ever go platinum in Australia and Hayley Westenra has had the fastest selling debut classical album ever in the UK. There are a number of music industry professionals living in Christchurch with significant international experience in addition to the artists and bands.

A number of gaps were identified however such as a lack of music industry infrastructure, suitable venues and support services especially when compared with other cities in New Zealand. Many believed a representative music body was needed to act as the face of Christchurch music, support the growth of the music industry and also secure closer relationships with music organisations and government agencies based in the North Island. The music industry is generally comprised of:

1. Composition of musical works, songwriters and music publishing
2. Promotion, management and agency related activities
3. Live performance and touring (usually the largest sub-sector in terms of numbers)
4. Recording & Production
5. Retail and distribution of recordings
6. Education and training

Realising the strengths and opportunities in the music industry in terms of economic, social and cultural value, in partnership with the music industry, the Christchurch Music Industry Trust was established to address the identified gaps and support the growth of the music industry of Christchurch. Being economically neutral, a charitable trust governed by experienced industry people was deemed to be the ideal vehicle for strengthening the Christchurch music community.

SUPPORTERS

CHART has some influential and keen supporters:

Brent HansenPatron of CHART
Brent was Christchurch born and raised before a career in journalism and the music industry took him to the Presidency of MTV Networks in Europe and Editor-in-Chief MTV Networks International. Brent’s acceptance of the Patronage is his endorsement of the value of the goals and objectives of the Trust.

Garry MooreFormer Mayor of Christchurch gave his endorsement to CHART as he sees the value to a city in actively supporting its creative musical talent.

Hayley WestenraChristchurch born Multi-platinum selling International Artist
“Growing up in Christchurch really gave me a solid grounding as a performer and singer with the help of numerous opportunities to develop my art. It’s a city full of extremely talented individuals with so much potential – we just need to make sure we’re giving every one of them as much help and support as we can so they can make our city proud.”

Scribe Christchurch born Multi-platinum selling International Artist
"An organization like CHART is going to make a big difference to the young musicians here in Christchurch. They don't have to go all the way to Auckland to find out how the industry works, ask for advice or get help - they can now do all that at home. It will be a massive help for musicians who just want to stay in Christchurch."

Cath AndersenChief Executive, New Zealand Music Commission
"It makes perfect sense that people who have worked successfully in the music industry in Christchurch are the ones offering advice to the city's musicians, managers, promoters and anyone else trying to start a career in music locally. CHART will be better equipped to do this than industry people from other major centres who know very little about the city's local scene. The function that CHART will perform is similar to what the NZMC (New Zealand Music Commission) undertakes in advising its artists to get out and do what they need to get done but come back and return those experiences to their own creative city".

Ross HerrickManager of the Dux-de-Lux, Christchurch’s longest running original music venue.
To quote Ross, “It would be my absolute pleasure to endorse CHART as I feel very strongly that Christchurch needs this sort of guiding force.”

Flip GraterDeveloping local Artist/Maiden Records
“If a local industry is to develop then it needs practical assistance from grassroots to high end levels and in this I see CHART as essential towards this development.”
