Jeff Fulton is the Manager of CHART and the Christchurch co-ordinator of the NZ Music Manager’s Forum, a music business rep and brings to CHART a working perspective on the domestic and international music industry.

In 2006 he was a founding trustee of CHART and in 2008 he had a pivotal role in the creation of CHARTFEST, Christchurch's NZ Music Month Festival and founded the annual National Recording Studios Open Day and continues to champion the Christchurch music scene.

From a musical family and the younger of twin boys, he started out as a drummer along side his guitarist brother with a wide record collection and spent the Flying Nun years at high school in Dunedin inspired by The Clean, The Chills, Sneaky Feelings and Straitjacket Fits. At Otago then Canterbury University, bands came and went and after gaining tertiary qualifications in arts and sciences, he spent time working in Auckland before in 1998 heading overseas to gain business skills in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In 2002, Jeff returned to New Zealand to study music production at SAE Auckland which led to a role as sound designer and engineer on the NZ Music Commission’s nationally distributed Making Music-Te Waihanga Puoro documentary. Jeff also helped co-ordinate the successful SWEET II Secondary School Music Education Project.

In 2003, Jeff joined the Neil Finn office in Auckland. Through the Finn Brothers 2004-05 Everyone Is Here album project and subsequent world tours, he acquired first hand domestic and international experience in recording, management, video production, marketing, finance, touring, media liaison and publishing. In managing Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios he was involved with artists such as Dave Dobbyn, Goldenhorse, The Chills, Betchadupa, Gasoline Cowboy, The Checks and Don McGlashan as well as the wider international music industry.

In July 2005, Jeff moved back to Christchurch to get involved with the local music industry and enjoy the city’s lifestyle opportunities. To CHART he brings his specific interests in artist management, production, publishing and promotion as well as his ideas and passion for the local music scene.

Jeff taught event management at the Linwood Urban Music Academy (LUMA) in 2007 and currently teaches music industry studies part-time at MAINZ, guest lectures at schools, CPIT Music Arts and the University of Canterbury. Since 2006, Jeff has been the Christchurch co-ordinator of the NZ Music Manager’s Forum and in November 2007, became CHART's full-time Manager. He fills his spare time playing drums in a band.

Musically, it's a great place to learn, live and find creative inspiration. My aim is to further establish the support structures to ensure the local music industry thrives”.

Neil was born in the UK, moving to South Africa aged 12. After finding University radio in early 80's Johannesburg and rising to Program Director, he joined Warner (WEA) Records South Africa as Promotions Assistant in 1984. After a promotion to WEA Label Manager in 1985 Neil was offered an International Marketing role at Warner (WEA) Music London in 1986 and relocated back home to take up the position. Head-hunted twice to BMG/RCA in 1988 and then to EMI Music in London in 1990, Neil eventually held the position of Senior VP International Marketing working with all global affiliated EMI labels. A transfer in 1992 took Neil back to Johannesburg as Marketing/A&R Director for EMI Music South Africa, a position he held until family reasons brought him to Christchurch in 1996.

Neil formed Big Deal Ltd on arrival in NZ - an umbrella company for all contract operations. Neil joined Christchurch local music TV station CRY TV as Programming Manager before it eventually closed in 1997. A 10-month contract role as Marketing Manager for EMI Music NZ in Auckland followed in 1998. Big Deal Productions started concert promotions in 1999 touring NZ acts The Feelers, Stellar*, Zed, Tadpole, Mutton Birds, Tim Finn, etc and extending to Australian and International acts in 2000 including The Living End, Regurgitator, Art Garfunkel, The Proclaimers, Glenn Tilbrook, Little River Band and various others.

Big Deal also staged various outdoor concert festivals in the city and around the country and also provided concert agency booking support for NZ acts such as Zed, Tadpole, and various up and coming local Christchurch bands. Big Deal was a key player in the resurgence of the NZ live music scene providing opportunities for NZ bands to tour successfully and professionally. A 2-month contract in Sydney for EMI Music in 2001 finally led to a 3-year appointment in Sydney as Head of Marketing for EMI Music Australia in 2002 working (amongst others) with various NZ bands on their Australian releases, including The Finn Brothers, Salmonella Dub, Goodshirt, Steriogram, Breaks Co-op etc.

Neil returned to Christchurch in October 2005 and immediately set up Size Eight Ltd with business partner Scott McCashin to stage an annual outdoor music festival in Christchurch called SouthernAmp. The inaugural event was held at QEII Park on Saturday 25th November 2005. Various music industry consultancy work continues in Australia and SE Asia.

After spending my youth in the Manawatu, I moved to London in 1987 living there until my return for family reasons in 1998. I spent most of my time in England working to be able to afford to see as many bands as I could.

On returning to NZ I moved to Wellington where I scored a job as one of the starting crew in the new Real Groovy store, working there until Aug 2006 when I moved to Christchurch to be the manager of the RG store in the garden city. During my time in the Wellington store I became involved in the ticketing and through that met a lot of promoters/bands/tour managers and since coming to Christchurch this area of the shop has improved greatly and we are becoming the first port of call for tickets.

While in Wellington I became involved in the local music scene. I was involved in the first Trinityroots album helping them to remain independent.

I managed The Recloose Live Band, putting on gigs and culminating in the release of the cd: Recloose Band Live at the San Francisco Bathhouse released thru Rhythmethod.

I also managed Grayson Gilmour who is one part of So So Modern. Again putting on gigs and organised the recording and release of two cds: Phantom Limbs and You Sleep We Creep.

I am looking forward to becoming more involved in the Christchurch music scene in any way I can and see CHART as a great opportunity to do so.

Chris Andrews Flip Grater

Flip has been writing and performing music as an independent artist since 2003. Flip has performed with musicians such as Dave Dobbyn, Anika Moa, Ben Lee, The Shins, and Hugh Cornwall, and she has travelled to Texas for South by Southwest (SXSW) twice, performing at the 2006 event.

In 2006, Flip released her debut album Cage For A Song which included a track that was selected for the hit US TV show Brothers and Sisters for the final episode of their first season. In 2007, Flip published her first book, The Cookbook Tour – a performance / travel journal and recipe book.

In 2008 Flip’s sophomore album Be All And End All reached number 8 on the independent music chart, was named in the amplifier.co.nz Top 20 Albums of The Year, and led to Flip winning a MMF Music Manager of The Year award as a self-managed artist.

Flip has recently returned from a two-month, 15-date European tour and is currently writing her second book. When Flip isn’t touring, she holds song-writing workshops in schools as a mentor for NZMIC, is a judge for the SmokefreeRockquest band competitions, runs Christchurch music label Maiden Records, and is a production manager for film company, Gorilla Pictures.

Lauren Mitchell Tim Baird

Tim has been involved in the Christchurch music scene since the early 90’s. He is best known for running critically acclaimed independent record label Pinacolada Records, which since its inception in 2001 has released debut albums by The Shocking Pinks (now signed to DFA Records New York), Pig Out and most recently Tiger Tones.

Tim started his involvement in the local scene as the Music Director of RDU 98.5 from 1991-96, and also hosted many crazy radio shows (including the NZ show in 1994-95) during this period. He also did sound engineering late at night in the RDU production studio downtime, which lead to his involvement in recording local bands as well as working on internationally released projects.

The best known of these international releases is the acclaimed live album by British indie group Flying Saucer Attack (released 1996) that he was involved in editing together for Bruce Russell’s Corpus Hermeticum label. The album was widely acclaimed, receiving ‘Album Of The Week’ and 9 stars out of 10 in NME.

After leaving RDU, Tim continued his involvement with the Christchurch scene by working at local institution Galaxy Records from 1996-2006, and going to plenty of gigs. He also carried on obsessively collecting records (he is known for having a rather ridiculous amount of vinyl) and DJing at local venues such as Doublehappy, Zinc Bar, and the Dux de Lux.

In 2005 he resumed his studies full time at the University of Canterbury, and now holdsa BCom (Honours) degree majoring in Marketing. He is currently writing his Masters Thesis on ‘Wine Tourism in New Zealand’, and has recently had research published as a case study in ‘Consumer Behaviour Vol. 6: The Asia Pacific Edition’. As well as doing the odd stint of tutoring at the University Tim continues to deal with the running of Pinacolada Records ‘from a shoebox’.

Lauren Mitchell Ross Herrick

Ross has been with the Dux de Lux since 1992 and is responsible for the day to day management of the Dux and booking both local and national bands for Dux de Lux Christchurch.

Ross is very passionate about NZ music and in particular the Christchurch music scene. He has given many local bands a break, and enjoys watching them start off at the Dux and move onto bigger things.

“I have a fantastic job, part of which I get to see now live acts, and see my favourites return”. Over the years my personal favourite live acts for me include - She’s Insane, Salmonella Dub, Pine, Mini Snap, Pig Out, Sommerset and The Tiger Tones to name a few”.

Ross has built up a strong network of both local and national musical contacts over the years, he has to work in with Band Management, Sound and Lighting people and most importantly ensuring the live gig goes according to plan. Each year the Dux hosts a New Eve’s party with top NZ bands headlining, Ross is responsible for the planning and management of these events to ensure it is a success.

Ross has many favourite NZ bands but his top list would have to be “Salmonella Dub, The Newz, Citizen Band, No Tag, No Idea, Pop Mechanix, Toy Love, The Clean, Shihad, Flying Solo, and Sexy Animals.” Ross has always been into music and when he left school he moved to Auckland and was part of the Punk scene. He lived in a communal house with other local punks, skins, hippies, and other alternative lifestylers, and followed the local Punk and Ska scene religiously, often spending the majority of his money on imported vinyl. “I still play and collect vinyl and my wife and I enjoy listening to 'Vintage Cuts' on RDU 98.5 FM, it’s a good trip down memory lane”.

Now that Ross is older he can’t quite fit into those stovepipes (partly due to many Dux buffalo chips) but predicted their comeback much to his wife’s disgust.

I have spent the last 15 years on RDU98.5FM as an on air DJ and the last decade playing out around Otautahi. For the past five years I have written a live music column for the Christchurch Press. I have also published in the now defunct Pavement magazine and done various on line reviews etc.

My association with the Christchurch music scene is pretty ingrained and I have worked hard over the years to support and do whatever I can to assist in the progress and promotion of all music, local, national and otherwise. Aside from the odd hater, I consider myself to have a good reputation within our industry and am known for ‘Calling it, as I see it’ when it comes to live reviews. The punter as well as the act is always present in my mind and I am keen to be involved in anything that improves or progresses their and our enjoyment of this music thing that we love so much.

Hip Hop, Downbeat and Ska/Punk are perhaps the genres closest to my heart, however, like any respectable music nerd; my record collection is fairly eclectic. I am also a vinyl junkie and seriously wish more Aotearoa acts had the resources to press on wax. Aside from vinyl I also collect a bit of art and tattoos, and like to read graphic novels (or comics for you civilians) and the odd actual book.

David is an English born musician and music producer who has been resident in New Zealand since 1993. Classically trained as a keyboardist and guitarist, and infatuated by both music and its technologies, David brings to the table a wealth of unique top level industry experience. A veteran of numerous world tours and major recording projects throughout the 1980's and 1990's, working constantly in some of the worlds' most prestigious recording studios and concert venues.

David's track record speaks for itself - he has worked regularly with some of the most influential contemporary rock musicians in the world – Steve Winwood, Jeff Beck, Sade, Lisa Stansfield, Roger Waters, Robert Fripp, David Sylvian ….. as well as working alongside some of the top producers in the music industry, including – Marius de Vries (Madonna, Annie Lennox, Massive Attack, Bjork), Phill Brown (Bob Marley, David Gilmour, Robert Plant, Dido), Nick Griffiths (Pink Floyd), Pat Leonard (Madonna), Leif Masses (Jeff Beck, Led Zeppelin, Abba)………..

Since emigrating to New Zealand, he has composed and produced soundtracks for several film and documentary productions for TVNZ, as well as numerous TV, Cinema & Radio ads for many of the top advertising agencies. Homegrown successes also include producing and writing with Salmonella Dub for the NZ award winning hit “Love your Ways”, and full production credits for several diverse NZ major label album projects. Following a ten year hiatus while he concentrated on his work here in NZ, David returned to the international scene in 2006, completing a world tour with Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris with their Grammy Award nominated project “All the Road Running”.

David has been employed as a tutor at C.P.I.T. The Jazz School since 1998, accepting a full- time tenure in 2003. Instrumental in the original design and writing of the contemporary music diploma and certificate courses, he was the Programme Leader for the Commercial / Rock Music Diploma until it's absorption into the general music programme in 2007. He also teaches on the Jazz School Degree Course for the University of Canterbury, and has contributed towards other Performing Arts Programmes at C.P.I.T.

Throughout 2008 David has been working as part of the Degree Planning Team for C.P.I.T. Jazz School’s new “Bachelor of Musical Arts”, and will once again be involved with the Rock and Popular Music Studies for this Degree as it launches in February 2009.
