Jeff Fulton is a passionate advocate of the New Zealand music industry. As the Canterbury co-ordinator of the NZ Music Manager’s Forum, a music business advisor and a true South Islander, Jeff is the Music Manager of CHART and brings a working perspective on the domestic and international music industry.

 

From a musical family, Jeff the younger of twin boys started out as a drummer with a wide record collection during the Flying Nun years in Dunedin. University bands came and went, and after gaining tertiary qualifications in arts and sciences, Jeff spent time working in Auckland before in 1998 heading overseas to gain business skills in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In 2002, Jeff returned to New Zealand to study music production at SAE Auckland which led to a role as sound designer and engineer on the NZ Music Commission’s nationally distributed Making Music documentary. Jeff also helped co-ordinate the successful SWEET II Secondary School Music Education Project.

In 2003, Jeff joined the Neil Finn office in Auckland. Through the Finn Brothers 2004-05 'Everyone Is Here' album project and subsequent world tours, Jeff acquired first hand domestic and international experience in recording, artist management, finance, publishing, touring, video production, marketing and media liaison. In managing Neil Finn’s studio he was involved with artists such as Dave Dobbyn, Goldenhorse, The Chills, Betchadupa, Gasoline Cowboy, The Checks and Don McGlashan, as well as the wider international music industry.

In July 2005, Jeff and his family moved back to Christchurch to enjoy the city’s lifestyle opportunities and get involved with the local music industry. With him, he brings his specific interests in artist management, production, publishing and promotion as well as his ideas and passion for the local music scene.

Jeff is a founding trustee of CHART and in November 2007 became CHART's full-time Manager. Jeff has taught event management at the Linwood Urban Music Academy (LUMA) in 2007 and currently teaches music industry studies at MAINZ guest lectures at schools, CPIT, UC and the Jazz School. Since 2006, Jeff has also been the Christchurch co-ordinator of the NZ Music Manager’s Forum and fills his spare time drumming in a part-time band.

Neil was born in the UK, moving to South Africa aged 12. After finding University radio in early 80's Johannesburg and rising to Program Director, he joined Warner (WEA) Records South Africa as Promotions Assistant in 1984. After a promotion to WEA Label Manager in 1985 Neil was offered an International Marketing role at Warner (WEA) Music London in 1986 and relocated back home to take up the position. Head-hunted twice to BMG/RCA in 1988 and then to EMI Music in London in 1990, Neil eventually held the position of Senior VP International Marketing working with all global affiliated EMI labels. A transfer in 1992 took Neil back to Johannesburg as Marketing/A&R Director for EMI Music South Africa, a position he held until family reasons brought him to Christchurch in 1996.

Neil formed Big Deal Ltd on arrival in NZ - an umbrella company for all contract operations. Neil joined Christchurch local music TV station CRY TV as Programming Manager before it eventually closed in 1997. A 10-month contract role as Marketing Manager for EMI Music NZ in Auckland followed in 1998. Big Deal Productions started concert promotions in 1999 touring NZ acts The Feelers, Stellar*, Zed, Tadpole, Mutton Birds, Tim Finn, etc and extending to Australian and International acts in 2000 including The Living End, Regurgitator, Art Garfunkel, The Proclaimers, Glenn Tilbrook, Little River Band and various others.

Big Deal also staged various outdoor concert festivals in the city and around the country and also provided concert agency booking support for NZ acts such as Zed, Tadpole, and various up and coming local Christchurch bands. Big Deal was a key player in the resurgence of the NZ live music scene providing opportunities for NZ bands to tour successfully and professionally. A 2-month contract in Sydney for EMI Music in 2001 finally led to a 3-year appointment in Sydney as Head of Marketing for EMI Music Australia in 2002 working (amongst others) with various NZ bands on their Australian releases, including The Finn Brothers, Salmonella Dub, Goodshirt, Steriogram, Breaks Co-op etc.

Neil returned to Christchurch in October 2005 and immediately set up Size Eight Ltd with business partner Scott McCashin to stage an annual outdoor music festival in Christchurch called SouthernAmp. The inaugural event was held at QEII Park on Saturday 25th November 2005. Various music industry consultancy work continues in Australia and SE Asia.

Born in Christchurch, Jaclyn has recently been involved in the re-branding and re-launch of New Zealand's iconic Sign of the Takahe however is now contracting her Marketing and Promotion skills to Frenzi Hospitality Group in Christchurch.

Rustic Entertainment has been responsible for bringing some of the biggest brands and Djs into the South Island including The Freestylers, Krafty Kuts, Stanton Warriors, Hed Kandi, Tom Middleton, Aquasky, The Rogue Element, Breakfastaz, Meat Katie, Nick Sentience, Ed Real, James Lawson and many many more crossing genres.

Jaclyn has been involved in aspects of organisation of events such as Unity and Southern Amp 2005/07 and also contracts to RDU and Fabel Music to work on such events as Sounday, The Main Divide and Cheap as Chips, she is also an active Lifeline Counsellor and founded the first annual Lifeline Fundraising Awareness Week managing to raise $25,000 in its first year.

While living in London Jaclyn was a promoter for superclub Wildchild helping with promotions for Fevah, Pickle, Farenhite, Omnipotence and Feersum. Moving to Dublin 2 and a half years later Jaclyn launched her own monthly club while holding a position as Assistant Editor for dSIDE Music, Fashion and Popular Culture Magazine, interviewing such artists as Carl Cox, John Digweed, Nick Warren, Kosheen, Dave Clarke, Mark Kavanagh, Goldfrapp, Aslan and many more. During this time Jaclyn was also spent time freelance writing for the clubbing and dance sections of TNT Magazine and Southern Cross magazine.

The last 5 years back in New Zealand have seen her move swiftly on from positions within Christchurch & Canterbury Marketing to then being integral to the launch and success of Mansion Luxury Lounge Bar in it's first year then to Infusion Magazine Auckland and back home to holding the Marketing Manager role for Dux de Lux Christchurch and Queenstown to being recruited to head major changes to Sign of the Takahe.

Jaclyn thrives on challenges and continues to ensure the scene actively progresses while emerging talent is continually promoted throughout Christchurch and New Zealand.

After spending my youth in the Manawatu, I moved to London in 1987 living there until my return for family reasons in 1998. I spent most of my time in England working to be able to afford to see as many bands as I could.

On returning to NZ I moved to Wellington where I scored a job as one of the starting crew in the new Real Groovy store, working there until Aug 2006 when I moved to Christchurch to be the manager of the RG store in the garden city. During my time in the Wellington store I became involved in the ticketing and through that met a lot of promoters/bands/tour managers and since coming to Christchurch this area of the shop has improved greatly and we are becoming the first port of call for tickets.

While in Wellington I became involved in the local music scene. I was involved in the first Trinityroots album helping them to remain independent.

I managed The Recloose Live Band, putting on gigs and culminating in the release of the cd: Recloose Band Live at the San Francisco Bathhouse released thru Rhythmethod.

I also managed Grayson Gilmour who is one part of So So Modern. Again putting on gigs and organised the recording and release of two cds: Phantom Limbs and You Sleep We Creep.

I am looking forward to becoming more involved in the Christchurch music scene in any way I can and see CHART as a great opportunity to do so.

Vicki Anderson is the Music Editor of the South Island's largest daily newspaper, The Press, where she has worked for over 15 years because it's a fantastic place to work. She is passionate about New Zealand music and her favourite Kiwi acts include Shihad, Shaky Hands, HLAH, Shapeshifter, The Bats and many, many, many more. Jordan Luck sang Victoria to her on her 25th birthday at the Methven pub _ it doesn't get more Kiwi than that. She likes walking on the beach (as long as there are no leg-humping unleashed dogs also out for a stroll), whiskers on kittens and the brief thrill she gets when the word 'accepted' comes up when she uses Eftpos.

Cath Andersen works at the NZMIC which is a Government funded arts agency who undertake projects in New Zealand and overseas to assist contemporary popular NZ music businesses and help grow the NZ music industry. Their resources are available to support musicians and industry professionals gain higher levels of success at home and abroad. NZMIC also works with the Ministry of Education for delivering music programmes into schools and runs the annual celebration NZ Music Month.

Though working a full 9-to-5 Job in the IT industry, Chris Andrews spends a great part of his life concentrating on various different musical pursuits… When not playing sports. An active musician in several bands and projects he has experienced the Ins-and-Outs of Christchurch's live musician scene.

These days Chris can often be found photographing live music events around town; the results of which archived on the http://thebigcity.co.nz website that Chris edits and maintains. The website includes a high-volume Christchurch-based gig guide, album and gig reviews, artist profiles, poster archives etc all in a user-submit capable format that encourages community contributions.

Chris has been a music critic for various publications locally (the Package), nationally (A Low Hum) and internationally (the now defunct Stylus Magazine) writing review, biography and interview pieces with a
variety of performers and has many friends within the indie-rock and experimental music communities up and down the country, maintaining contact with touring musicians and often providing help with gear, or just a place to crash.

As a musician Chris is currently playing bass-guitar for up-and-coming pop outfit Pop Hits City, whilst experimental two-piece 2 million lights (with James Musgrave of A Flight to Blackout) and Rock'n'Roll
combo Palace of Wisdom lay in hiatus. Chris is a skilled Bassist and Producer, a capable Drummer, Vocalist and Keyboardist and a terrible Guitarist.

Callam has been involved in the music industry in Christchurch for the past 12 years, and currently works full time booking bands for SOL Square (Yellow Cross, Fat Eddies, Cartel, etc). He has been actively involved in promoting music events for the past 10 years, a career he began while co-owner of the Daeger Bar – a venue that he operated in the late 1990s.

After selling the Daeger Bar in 1999, he and business partner Geoff Curtain opened Bunker Records, a specialist music retail store selling music imported from Europe. While operating the store they also set up Prominent Productions, a business formed to promote music events in Christchurch. Under this umbrella they have successfully toured a number of artists, and built up the annual ‘Unity’ events - a multi genre, multi venue party held every Easter weekend.

Callam has also worked as a house DJ since 1997, holding down a number of different residencies and playing extensively at clubs and festivals across New Zealand including The Gathering, Rhythm & Vines, & Destination. In 2003 (via a public forum), he was voted Best House DJ, Best Progressive DJ, and Best Overall DJ in the Christchurch section.

In 2007, Callam was the events co-ordinator at the University of Canterbury Students Association. Aside from his current role at SOL Square, Callam owns JAGG - an entertainment website and publication, and is also the organiser of the Canaan Downs Festival – an annual New Years event held at the famed festival site on top of Takaka Hill.

Currently Lauren Mitchell is the contemporary vocal tutor at Rangi Ruru High School and runs a private vocal coaching practice. Alongside this she writes original music for my her own band and various other song writing projects which most recently included Oakley Grenells' album Moving On and Rare Shot Blues Debut album, and performs with her seven piece band - L A Mitchell and the Nativa Band.

Lauren is backing vocalist and keyboardist for another prominent Christchurch rock band the Dukes performing with them in support of INXS, Gomez and the Dudes summer of love tour, as well as the Mile high performance for MTV and Air New Zealand and attending the MTV awards in Sydney as part of the mtv competition kick start. Lauren is the owner and director of an independent record label called Honest Box Records which exclusively represents the recording and production of her original music starting with the release in August 2007 of her self produced debut album.

Lauren's musical meander started when she first heard music and became un-naturally attached to it. However her journey began in earnest in 2001 at the CPIT Jazz school, graduating in 2004 with a certificate in contemporary music a Bachelors degree in music majoring in vocal performance which played a integral part in the development of her vocal coaching practice. "This business helps to fund my record label and other creative endeavours. Maintaining a diversity of musical initiatives is a good reason why my career exists" explains Lauren.

"I am an advocate of creative practioners developing their music as a business and using their creativity with in this frame work to advance their product. These aspects have been in the past somthing musicians find distasteful but in a market of increasing independence its a crucial advantage to the independent musician to have an understanding of how to bridge these gaps between them selves and their audience or income in a fliud, consistant and effective way with out feeling creatively compromised."

Tim has been involved in the Christchurch music scene since the early 90’s. He is best known for running critically acclaimed independent record label Pinacolada Records, which since its inception in 2001 has released debut albums by The Shocking Pinks (now signed to DFA Records New York), Pig Out and most recently Tiger Tones.

Tim started his involvement in the local scene as the Music Director of RDU 98.5 from 1991-96, and also hosted many crazy radio shows (including the NZ show in 1994-95) during this period. He also did sound engineering late at night in the RDU production studio downtime, which lead to his involvement in recording local bands as well as working on internationally released projects.

The best known of these international releases is the acclaimed live album by British indie group Flying Saucer Attack (released 1996) that he was involved in editing together for Bruce Russell’s Corpus Hermeticum label. The album was widely acclaimed, receiving ‘Album Of The Week’ and 9 stars out of 10 in NME.

After leaving RDU, Tim continued his involvement with the Christchurch scene by working at local institution Galaxy Records from 1996-2006, and going to plenty of gigs. He also carried on obsessively collecting records (he is known for having a rather ridiculous amount of vinyl) and DJing at local venues such as Doublehappy, Zinc Bar, and the Dux de Lux.

In 2005 he resumed his studies full time at the University of Canterbury towards a BCom majoring in Marketing, whilst dealing with the running of Pinacolada Records ‘from a shoebox’.

David is an English born musician and music producer who has been resident in New Zealand since 1993. Classically trained as a keyboardist and guitarist, and infatuated by both music and its technologies, David brings to the table a wealth of unique top level industry experience. A veteran of numerous world tours and major recording projects throughout the 1980's and 1990's, working constantly in some of the worlds' most prestigious recording studios and concert venues.

David's track record speaks for itself - he has worked regularly with some of the most influential contemporary rock musicians in the world – Steve Winwood, Jeff Beck, Sade, Lisa Stansfield, Roger Waters, Robert Fripp, David Sylvian ….. as well as working alongside some of the top producers in the music industry, including – Marius de Vries (Madonna, Annie Lennox, Massive Attack, Bjork), Phill Brown (Bob Marley, David Gilmour, Robert Plant, Dido), Nick Griffiths (Pink Floyd), Pat Leonard (Madonna), Leif Masses (Jeff Beck, Led Zeppelin, Abba)………..

Since emigrating to New Zealand, he has composed and produced soundtracks for several film and documentary productions for TVNZ, as well as numerous TV, Cinema & Radio ads for many of the top advertising agencies. Homegrown successes also include producing and writing with Salmonella Dub for the NZ award winning hit “Love your Ways”, and full production credits for several diverse NZ major label album projects. Following a ten year hiatus while he concentrated on his work here in NZ, David returned to the international scene in 2006, completing a world tour with Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris with their Grammy Award nominated project “All the Road Running”.

David has been employed as a tutor at C.P.I.T. The Jazz School since 1998, accepting a full- time tenure in 2003. Instrumental in the original design and writing of the contemporary music diploma and certificate courses, he was the Programme Leader for the Commercial / Rock Music Diploma until it's absorption into the general music programme in 2007. He also teaches on the Jazz School Degree Course for the University of Canterbury, and has contributed towards other Performing Arts Programmes at C.P.I.T.

Throughout 2008 David has been working as part of the Degree Planning Team for C.P.I.T. Jazz School’s new “Bachelor of Musical Arts”, and will once again be involved with the Rock and Popular Music Studies for this Degree as it launches in February 2009.
