Tainted
make no bones about being one of NZ’s best live metal bands and are CHART's September Featured Artist. The hardworking Christchurch band’s long-awaited Second album “Carved and Created” will be finally be released in October and is expected to be one of the biggest NZ metal releases for quite a few years. Tainted will once again unleash their talent at Southern Amp on the NZ Music Stage this year and Tim Facoory talks to Jeff Fulton about plans for their release.

So Tim, there's always been a healthy mass of metallers in ChCh - tell us your thoughts on the metal scene here?

Yeah there is a huge amount of metallers here in Chch, but so is there in any town in New Zealand, regardless of whether it be Auckland or Invercargill. However I do have to say the Christchurch metal scene has always been one of the best in the country, Chch metallers support the genre, and the shows go off far more than anywhere else in New Zealand as far as energy goes.

Your second album is finished and I've heard some interesting stories about how and where it was recorded?carved and created album tainted metal nz

It’s been a Long time coming this album, and I can tell you we have all put our souls into this album.
It has been produced by Clint Murphy (Manic Street Preachers, Melanie C, 50 Cent, G-Unit, Blindspott, Carly Binding, The Feelers, Goldenhorse, 8 Foot Sativa) at New Zealands premier York St Recording Studios. It’s taken us a year to complete the album mainly because of the fact we all live and work here in Chch and our Producer and the studio are in Auckland, we had pre production sessions in Auckland with Clint and then in Christchurch before entering the studio.

Getting the opportunity to record in such a prestige studio was nothing other than awesome. Clint (and his magic ears) was great to work with, a lot of fun, very demanding on the ol’ body. I was flying to Auckland on Monday red eye flights then straight into the studio till like 12pm to 1am then flying back to home on Saturday’s for work catch up, then come Monday back on the plane again, that went on for many weeks.

All in All though it was damn worth while!!!! “Carved and Created” is a Huge step forward for Tainted, the mix of musicians we all are is reflected throughout the whole album. This is Tainted’s best work hands down, we went in with 16 songs and came out with 10 incredible tracks we are all immensely proud of.

So what's the plan for releasing the album?

We have aligned ourselves with Isaac Promotions who are releasing the album under the Universal Umbrella in New Zealand. This is something we are stoked about. Release is October 6th, in all good music stores, Real Groovy, JB HI FI, The Warehouse, ITunes.

Who are you listening too at the moment, tell us about your new songs and if there any new influences in your song-writing?

Me personally, Slipknot, Machine Head, Death, Arch Enemy, as for Slim, Leith, Linly and Sean, we all have different tastes in music that’s for sure, haha, and truthfully that’s why Tainted’s music appeals across the board. There’s a little something in there for every metal fan. This album has music that’s personal to all of us in many different ways, but one thing it does have is groove and feeling.

Tainted have built a large following over the last few years, what's the secret to pulling a metal crowd in ChCh?

Um, well, um haha, Christchurch metal punters want a good night out, good music and good entertainment!! Cheap drinks helps too haha, but seriously people don’t want to go a gig and be able to comprehend what’s being played, there’s nothing worse than going to a show where the PA doesn’t quite cut it or the musicianship is sloppy therefore making it muddy, or EAR PEIRCING FEEDBACK deafening them, or having a soundman that pushes the sound up so loud that your ears feel like they’re going to burst.

Tainted have always gone out of there way when putting their names to shows to make sure people are there to enjoy themselves. We change our song set lists every show as well as our routine, so that when people do come out to one of our shows they aren’t seeing the same performance over and over again.

What are your plans for 2008, any shows planned to help promote the album?

Well….. we release the CC on October 6th and then we are basically on the road from October through to the end of November.

Our Christchurch Album release show is going to be at the Civic as we support Parkway Drive. It’s an all ages show Licensed as well on October 19th. Sixlip, Habit and Beneath the Silence are joining the bill, cost is $25, and tickets will be on sale at Real Groovy. This will be an awesome show, not only our Album Release but Parkway Drive, what a way to celebrate our album. We were also lucky enough to secure a call back for Southern Amp 08 on November 9th at Westpac Arena Festival Park.

Then we hit the road, expect to see us in Dunedin, Palmerston North, Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland.

We have just finished shooting a video for “Departed” which will start airing mid September. We shot the video with Richard Bell at Shuriken keep an eye out for it, it’s a wicked video... watch it HERE.

Thanks Tim and best of luck for the release and tour.
