CHARTFEST 08 Review
by Miriama McDonald
c/o www.stuff.co.nz/thepress

Last night the Christchurch Town Hall was transformed from its usual air of high brow proceedings into a melee of popular culture and youth. As we head toward the end of NZ Music Month, Christchurch music organisation CHART celebrated the future of music with a day and night of workshops, mentoring and live performance.

Following a busy afternoon, the evening bought with it a fresh crowd of curious punters and a three-zone local musical feast, which came after an hour-long expo which gave those interested an opportunity to check out the various musical stalls representing everything from education to radio and production.

The three zones consisted of alternative country stalwarts The Eastern, who kept the mezzanine bar area humming throughout the night, while the James Hay Theatre hosted the Kiwi FM roots/hip hop/funk stage and the auditorium lent itself to the Rock FM stage of heavier rock and dance acts.

Highlights for the evening included young dance/punk act The Tiger Tones, progressive rock/funk three piece Cairo Knife Fight, historic indie popsters The Bats and home-town hip hop girl made good, Ladi6 along with DJ Parkes.

The crowd, although not huge, was big enough to sustain both rooms, including an acceptable mosh pit gathering for rock act The Valves and to hear the middle of the road strains of the popular Atlas. With the calibre of acts which normally perform at the Town Hall it was a refreshing sight to behold the multi-genred local talent given the opportunity to play and educate old and new fans alike.

Judging by the enthusiasim throughout the day and night, from all ages, and all the acts' generosity and good-natured performances there is hope for the future of fresh local produce.

The Eastern promise to deliver a haymaker of footstomp folk, 12 round rock' n'roll, brokeheart blues, and old time harmony all with a little country kick. They bring… Backpacks full of road songs, battered acoustics and no name electrics, banjo and glockenspiel, mandolin, harmonica, foot stomps and old time singing, straight from the gut, the fist and the heart… Strummer/Jones, Morrissey/Marr, the Hanks Chinaski and Williams, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Devlin, Memphis and myth, the south from Gore to the Cargill and back...

And YOUR MC for the Night...

ed muzikED MUZIK - www.myspace.com/muziked
Introducing (drum roll) Mr. ED MUZIK and his menacing laptop to keep the night under control. If there was one thing you could say about Ed Muzik, and there is, it's that he's unpredictable. After spending the early part of 2008 quiet on the local scene and loud on the radio, Ed is back with new gear, new songs and the same sarcastic attitude. At CHARTFEST, he'll be manning the mic, introducing the bands, reuniting lost children with their parents and letting lose a torrent of hilarious one liners.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is New Zealand Music Month?

NZ Music Month began back in 2001 when, despite the good music that was out there, Kiwi tunes were woefully under-represented on our airwaves, TV screens, and charts – barely reaching a double-digit percentage of content on air. Aiming to correct this reliance on imported music, NZ Music Month gave our media a chance to showcase homegrown talent that may not normally have reached the public. In the process a bunch of stars were uncovered, and New Zealanders' taste for their own musical heroes confirmed. Over the past couple of years the focus has moved to include the public as much as possible in what has become a truly national celebration of our favourite artists.

NZ Music Month is a partnership between the NZ Music Commission and a number of other organisations including songwriters' association APRA, Independent Music NZ, NZ On Air, the Radio Broadcasters Association and the Recording Industry Association of NZ. Whether they are hearing Kiwi music on the radio, seeing it on TV, or – better still – live in person, New Zealanders across the country experience more of our very own homegrown talent on our airwaves and stages throughout the month, showing their support for local music by coming to one of the official events, buying a Kiwi CD, attending one of the hundreds of other gigs that take place, or pulling on a NZ Music Month t-shirt from Hallensteins.

Since 2007, CHART has been involved with NZMM through partnering with these organisations and hosting and supporting live music showcases, events, workshops, gigs and a Christchurch NZMM calender.
