The New Zealand Music Month spotlight hits the garden city again with CHARTFEST - Christchurch’s largest annual all ages indoor music festival and industry expo celebrating NZ Music Month. Everything you need to know about the Christchurch music scene is on show in the Town Hall complex from 4pm til 10.30pm on Fri 29 May 2009. Music performance clinics, career workshops, industry panel discussions and over 20 of Christchurch’s premier live acts rocking 4 stages - Solaa, Shocking Pinks, Nathan King, Clap Clap Riot, Beneath The Silence, The Eastern, Lindon Puffin & The Transgressions, Ragamuffin Children, The Harbour Sessions, Truth, Maitreya, Isaac Chambers, Reality Chant Sound, Rare Shot Blue and Awakened Inferno live (checkout the artist profiles).
Following the success from the inaugural 2008 event, CHARTFEST 2009 coincides with Youth Week and Canterbury Careers Month and kicks off with a career and industry expo, music performance clinics, back stage tours, music gaming zone, artist signing tent, giveaways, prizes and much more. Everything you ever needed to know about the Christchurch music scene will be on show. Then from 6.45pm over 20 of Christchurch’s premier live acts rock 4 stages around the Town Hall.
CHARTFEST’s aim is to educate, inform, entertain and inspire students aged 12-22 to follow a music industry career – as a musician or involved in the support and service roles around musicians, i.e. managers, promoters, event management, live sound, media, etc while demonstrating the industry capability and opportunities available in Christchurch. The festival taps into the rich vein of talent residing and originating from the garden city and aim s to encourage the next music generation via a range of interactive music activities and showcases. Not only for aspiring musicians, but budding managers, producers, journalists, accountants, lawyers, stylists, web/graphic designers... anyone passionate about a career in the wider music industry.

From 4pm, the Town Hall Foyer is transformed into a hive of activity at the CHARTFEST EXPO with interactive stands featuring educational providers, studios, venues, music organizations (CHART, APRA, NZMC, NZOA, MMF, IMNZ, RIANZ), radio stations and many more.
The next music generation can rub shoulders with NZ music industry reps, discuss career options and discover all the music-related training options available around town. The CHARTFEST09 Band Search competition gives talented young musicians from around the city’s high schools the chance to gain exposure and help kick start their careers. Open to anyone at high school, finalists will be selected from initial audition rounds through school lunchtimes from May 11th to 20th where a finalist is chosen from each school, then all finalists perform live in front of a judging panel and audience on 7pm, Friday 22 May at Zebedees, with the winner opening CHARTFEST main stage a week later on Friday 29 May.
