Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.

This simple act has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world. As a result, at 8pm on the 29 March, 2008 millions of people in some of the world’s major capital cities, including Copenhagen, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane and Tel Aviv will unite and switch off for Earth Hour.

Christchurch Unplugs for Earth Hour

Switch off your lights and join us for Earth Hour Unplugged in Christchurch’s Cathedral Square from 6pm – 10pm on Saturday 28 March 2009.

We have an exceptional line-up of local musicians; all passionate about the cause and ready to entertain you with four hours of continuous music. So gather your friends and family, bring a picnic blanket and sit back, relax and enjoy … as the tempo builds during the countdown to 8.30pm when the lights on the Cathedral will be switched off to mark the beginning of Earth Hour.

You will be entertained by:

* Dr Sanchez - Latin Guitar
* Hera
* The Ragamuffin Children
* The Easy Hearts
* The Eastern
* The Flip Grater Band

Plus there will be lots of great ‘energy efficient’ prizes to be won! This is a family friendly event and a unique way to experience Earth Hour.

You are invited to attend an Earth Hour Warm-up Event in the Christchurch Bus Exchange hosted by WWF, More FM and TV3's Sunrise programme.

When: Friday 27 March, 7:00am - 8:30am.
Where: Bus Exchange "The Crossing" main waiting room (Platform A) off Lichfield Street

Why:
A local chalk artist (Marc Barnes) will be drawing a huge Earth Hour Banner that people can sign and make an Earth Hour pledge. Each person who does, will receive some great prizes courtesy of More FM, Eco-Store and Energy Mad Eco-bulbs. Sunrise TV will be crossing live to Christchurch at 7.30am to see how many names are on the board and to see how our community can join together to fight climate change.
