Panel discussion with Jason Kerrison (OpShop), Ruth Carr (Minuit) & Jody Lloyd (Trillion).
With the 20th anniversary of Smokefreerockquest, the enduring power of New Zealand musicians will be on show in Christchurch. Join some of our best singer/songwriters - Jason Kerrison (OpShop), Ruth Carr (Minuit) & Jody Lloyd (Trillion) in a panel discussion about what inspires them to write songs.
An eager crowd of around 30 guests joined Jeff Fulton (CHART) and Petrina George (APRA) to find out more about these local songwriters - their processes, influences and inspirations. Thanks to Jason, Jody and Ruth for sharing their stories in what was a great addition to the Christchurch Writers Festival programme.

Jason Kerrison : singer and frontman for chart-topping NZ act Opshop - www.opshopmusic.com

With the single "Maybe", they are the first New Zealand band to go to the #1 position on iTunes New Zealand in its history. Beating out Mika, Regina Spektor, Avril Lavigne, Beyoncé & Shakira, The Fray, Silverchair, Fall Out Boy, Justin Timberlake and Snow Patrol. "Maybe" is the first single off the album Second Hand Planet, released in April 2007. Come hear Jason share his stories behind their songs.
Ruth Carr : frontperson for NZ's premiere live breakbeat act Minuit - www.minuit.co.nz
'I never kept anything i stole, i never stole anything i kept - except you'
From St Petersburg to Berlin to BBC Radio1 to LA, this ex-Nelson girl has led her band around the globe with a huge amount of integrity, and her unique take on vocals has seen her begin to be roped in on albums by electronic heavyhitters worldwide.
Jody Lloyd : electronica and hip-hop musician and record producer. www.trillion.co.nz
As a kid, Jody Lloyd grew up on his parents Beatles record collection. Singing along to songs like 'I've just seen a face' he grew to understand the importance of melody and rhythm within song. As time passed Jody thought that there was no point in trying to write any songs because The Beatles had written all the best ones. Then out of the blue as a high school leaver he realised the third key factor to a good song; personal experience. Lyrics became a daily task and and songs began to take shape in the form of rap. Lyrics are just as or more important than melody. Jody first released his recordings in 1993, and since has written hundreds of songs, all unique to his own life experiences.
Presented in association with CHART and APRA.
