JazzQuest is a competition for secondary school jazz bands which aims to showcase the performance of school jazz bands and musicians. The competition was first held by CPIT Jazz School in 2006 to encourage jazz in schools. The competition is run in conjunction with JAM - Jazz Mentoring – a programme in which Jazz School tutors work with school ensembles.

Tuesday 29 to Thursday 31 July 9-3pm

SHOWCASE CONCERT
In addition, there will be a showcase concert at Majestic House on:
Thursday 31 July at 7.30 pm.
This concert will feature placed groups from the competition and also doubles as the first event of the Christchurch Big Band Festival. (Please indicate your group’s availability for this concert on the application form).

COMPETITION
• The competition is divided up into big band (10-20) and small band (3-9) sections.
• Each band gives a 20 minute performance, and groups need to get on stage, set up, play and get off stage within 30 minutes.
• The chosen repertoire should reflect a diversity of jazz styles, and include at least one swing piece.
• Your performance time warm up room will be advised in early July. The warm up rooms are available for an hour before performance time.
• All groups and musicians must remain present at the approx 2 hour session in which their group is scheduled for performance to remain eligible for an award.
• A Drum kit, piano, bass amp, keyboard amp, two guitar amps, 3 microphones, chairs and music stands will be provided for the performance.

GENERAL ADMISSION
The public are encouraged to attend all competition sessions, and admission is by gold coin donation at the door.
