The Music Education Conference 2009 follows the successful 2007 conference in Wellington. Traditionally it has been a biennial conference organised on behalf of Music Education New Zealand Aotearoa (MENZA) and held in a different NZ centre each time. It is organised by a local group of music educators affiliated to MENZA.

The aim of the conference is to promote, develop and foster music education across all levels of schooling. The conference has already received grants from Creative NZ and the Canterbury Trust, which has recognised the strategic importance of this conference for the music industry.

Performances and concerts have already been confirmed from the National Youth Orchestra and the New Zealand Trio, with the Trio performing a specially commissioned work for the conference. The keynote speaker is Dr Pamela Burnard (Cambridge University) and the opening speaker is Prof John Hopkins, former Director of the NZ Symphony Orchestra.
