When You’re Strange

When You’re Strange

Running time: 90 mins
With: Robby Krieger, Ray Manzarek, Jim Morrison, Narrated by Jonny Depp
Tom DiCillo summons the inflammatory spirit of 60s art-rock group The Doors and its blazingly beautiful frontman Jim Morrison in a brilliant collage of performance footage shot between 1966 and 1971, much of it never-before-seen. “The singer’s elevation into a leaping and whirling Dionysian prince in dark curls, conch belt, and leather pants is one of the great operatic-erotic spectacles in rock. The film gets that drama, and the drama of his alcoholic descent as well. When You’re Strange does have one major idiosyncrasy. There are no interviews – at all... read more

Trimpin: The Sound of Invention

Trimpin: The Sound of Invention

Running time: 77 mins
With: Trimpin, Kronos Quartet, Conlon Nancarrow
“The artist known simply as Trimpin is a sonic experimenter, a combination of inventor, engineer and composer, who builds stunning installations, such as a mountain of self-tuning, automatic electric guitars or a perpetual motion machine. Originally from Germany’s Black Forest region, as a young boy he became obsessed with Harper’s Electricity Book for Boys, and was drawn to America when he discovered he would have access to more material (that is, junk) which he could use in his creations... read more

TrinityRoots, Music Is Choice

TrinityRoots, Music Is Choice

Running time: 70 mins
With: Warren Maxwell, Rio Hunuki-Hemopo, Riki Gooch
Sarah Hunter’s music-filled documentary is a sharp and lively memento of the jazz-inflected Wellington reggae unit TrinityRoots. Lead singer/guitarist Warren Maxwell, Rio Hunuki-Hemopo and Riki Gooch formed TrinityRoots in the early 90s and sang their last of their plaintive, drifting three-way harmonies at the Wellington Town Hall in February 2005 in a sellout concert to raise relief funds for the Boxing Day Tsunami... read more

The Runaways

Running time: 109 mins
With: Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Michael Shannon
The Runaways tells the story of its namesake band – the all-girl teen band that launched Joan Jett’s career in the 1970s. Directed by photographer and music-video director Floria Sigismondi, the movie stars two of the most sought-after young actresses working today… read more

Pianomania

Pianomania

Running time: 93 mins
With: Stefan Knüpfer, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Alfred Brendel

“Concert pianists can be a fussy bunch, but they’re nothing compared to the temperamental demands of a Steinway grand piano. Pianomaniagets up close and personal with a group of world famous virtuosos – Lang Lang, Alfred Brendel, Rudolf Buchbinder, Till Fellner and Pierre-Laurent Aimard – but the real stars of this penetrating documentary are Stefan Knüpfer, the earnest piano tuner doubling as physician and voice coach, and the beautiful instruments themselves... read more

NY Export: Opus Jazz

NY Export: Opus Jazz

Running time: 60 mins
With: Tiler Peck, Brittany Pollack, Troy Schumacher

“A visual feast of color and physical beauty unfolds throughout this ‘ballet in sneakers,’ a film adaptation of the 1958 gem by Jerome Robbins, who choreographed the piece as a companion to his famed West Side Story. Shot on location in New York, the cast, made up of New York City Ballet dancers, stays true to the theatrical and musical rhythms of the 50s… read more

Wah Do Dem

Wah Do Dem
Running Time: 76 mins
With: Sean ‘Bones’ Sullivan, Norah Jones, Ira Wolf-Tuton,

Unfolding to a backbeat of chilled Jamaican pop, Wah Do Dem is a smart and funny account of everything that goes wrong (and a few things that go miraculously right) for a Brooklyn indie rock hipster alone in the Caribbean. Devised and shot on little more than a backpacker’s budget, the film is as fresh and unpredictable as every new day of his travels... read more

The Concert

The Concert
Running time: 119 mins
With: Alexeï Guskov, Dmitry Nazarov, Mélanie Laurent

A band of out-of-work Moscow musicians travels to Paris posing as the celebrated Bolshoi Orchestra in this lavish, shamelessly popular comedy-drama from director Radu Mihaileanu (Live and Become). Exit through the Gift Shop

Exit through the Gift Shop

Running time: 86 mins
With: Banksy, Thierry Guetta, Deborah Guetta, Space Invader

Flagrantly attention-seeking but famously anonymous, Brit street-artist/prankster Banksy has now put his name to this energetic, headily entertaining item of art-world provocation. The film was supposed to be about him, and ultimately it is, but Banksy turned the camera on Thierry Guetta, the wannabe LA artist who was documenting his activities. Unhappy with Guetta’s footage... read more
