SmokefreeRockquest is the biggest and most influential nation-wide youth event held in New Zealand, reaching audience numbers in excess of 100,000 every year. Founded in 1989 by music teachers Glenn Common and Pete Rainey, who now run Rockquest Promotions full time out of Nelson, it has become a New Zealand institution.

Musical successes from Smokefreerockquest over its 20-year history include Evermore, Die!Die!Die!, the Datsuns, Brooke Fraser, Anika Moa, Cut off your Hands, Flight of the Conchords, The Electric Confectionaires, Elemeno P, So So Modern, OpShop, Steriogram, Fat Freddys Drop, Aaradhna, Atlas, The Feelers, The Black Seeds, Nesian Mystic, Bic Runga, The Have, Fur Patrol, Liam Finn, Pine, King Kapisi, Neil Robinson and The Checks.

The anniversary is also being marked with the release of a double CD: Melodies, Moshpits and Mullets - 20 Years of Smokefreerockquest. This collection of the best bands and musicians to come through Smokefreerockquest includes The Checks, Anika Moa, Evermore, The Datsuns, Weta, Steriogram, Fur Patrol, Sommerset, Brooke Fraser, Die Die Die, The Rabble and many more. The CD goes on sale on August 25, $24.95 at all music stores.

C4 coverage
Smokefreerockquest regional finals from this year begin to screen on C4 this week, featuring Christchurch, Manawatu and Auckland East. The programmes screen at 5pm, during Vodafone Select live, starting on Friday August 22.
