* * *
The action includes thrill rides, music workshops, market place and plenty of bars and food stalls. The Westpac Arena will form Southern Amp’s Main Stage, once again presented by The Rock. The best of Australasia’s club scene will be on show at the Ministry Of Sound Stage while The Edge NZ Music Stage and the CHART / RDU 98.5FM ChCh Music Stage will showcase top current and up-and-coming NZ and Christchurch bands.
THE LINEUP!

(Inside Westpac Arena – Starts 12.30pm, Ends 11.15pm)
SEETHER - www.myspace.com/seether
What Seether have done since 2002 – when they released their US debut “Disclaimer” – is capture the attention of music fans across the globe with epic riffs and thunderous rhythms. The reworked “Disclaimer II” went platinum in USA when a new rendition of the ballad “Broken” became a Top 20 US chart hit. Seether’s success carried forward with 2005’s “Karma and Effect”, which debuted on the Billboard Album Charts at #8 containing the huge hit “Remedy”. After a stint in rehab, Shaun Morgan, front man/guitarist and principal songwriter’s new outlook on life and music has resulted in this year’s excellent “Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces”, easily the South African-bred, LA-based hard rock band’s most innovative studio album yet. “Fake It” – the radio smash that launched the disc has been a huge hit in NZ followed by the equally anthemic “Rise Above This”. Their headline slot at Southern Amp will be the band’s FIRST EVER (and long overdue…) concert appearance in NZ.
THE CHARLATANS - www.myspace.com/thecharlatans
As The Charlatans approach their 20th anniversary, their music continues to be as inspirational to hundreds of thousands of fans as it did when they first appeared on the British music scene in 1989. They first tasted chart success when their 2nd and now iconic indie single “The Only One I Know” became a top 10 hit in 1990 and have since gone on to establish themselves as a major force in the British scene, enjoying nine Top 10 albums (including three Number 1’s) and 22 Top 40 singles. After some prestigious support slots like Oasis’ famous Knebworth gigs in 1996, The Who at Wembley and The Rolling Stones at Twickenham in 2007, the band became first in the UK to release their new album “You Cross My Path” entirely free as an MP3 download through the
website of popular UK radio station Xfm. They visit NZ for the FIRST TIME to support the album’s release on Cooking Vinyl/Shock Records after a run of European summer festivals including T in the Park, Splendour, V Festival and Oxegen. Southern Amp 2008 will be their only NZ festival appearance.
THE DANDY WARHOLS - www.myspace.com/thedandywarhols
The Dandy Warhols need little introduction but pose, if not an actual threat, then at least a series of pressing questions; Where do they come from? What drives them? And perhaps most of all, what do they want with us…? Returning to NZ for their first live appearance since Big Day Out 2004 equipped with a brand new album “Earth To The Dandy Warhols” on their own brand new record label might help answer some of those questions for the band from Portland, Oregon who have given us a swag of psych-pop hits over the last decade-plus. One of the few bands in the music business whose name constantly means ‘quality’and ‘unpredictability’, with no questions asked!
THE LIVING END - www.myspace.com/thelivingend
It has been more than 10 years since The Living End released their breakout double-A sided single “Second Solution”/“Prisoner of Society” – with many hit songs, gold & platinum albums, sold-out shows, festival headlining appearances, world tours and thousands of satisfied punters in between. The Melbourne trio’s 5th studio album “White Noise” is released 19th July and is kicked off with the powerhouse new single “How Do We Know”. As a live act, the band’s reputation around the world is unquestioned – on a great night there is barely a band on the planet that can touch them! The band returns to NZ for their 2nd appearance at Southern Amp 2008. We are STOKED to have them back!
WETA - www.myspace.com/wetarock
Filling the gap left by Testament will be Wellington rock band WETA. Formed in 1995 the band built a huge following as the fiercest live act in the country securing support slots with Shihad, Regurgitator, Everclear, The Foo Fighters & Soundgarden. After moving to Melbourne and scoring platinum sales of their debut album “Geographica”, various dysfunctional fist fights and all sorts of other rock & roll ‘issues’, caused the band to split up in 2001. Now reconvened and raring to go, the band set out on their first NZ dates in 7 years including a main stage appearance at Southern Amp 08!
GYROSCOPE - www.myspace.com/gyroscope
Gyroscope have nailed it on their third album, “Breed Obsession” with the four best friends from Perth Australia pushing far beyond the infectious and intelligent pop-rock of their breakthrough 2006 album “Are You Involved?” From the standout piano-driven first single ‘Snakeskin’, to the intricate electronica-tinged ‘1981’ and personal, anthemic ‘Australia’, the band’s 3rd album’s beauty is in its subtlety and complexity. Gyroscope are making strong waves on Kiwi radio and make their first NZ festival appearance at Southern Amp 2008.
THE JORDAN LUCK BAND - www.myspace.com/jordanlucknz
The Jordan Luck Band, front man and pop-writing genius with one of NZ’s iconic and legendary bands The Exponents, Jordan has clocked up a staggering 18 Top 40 singles over the years, with “Victoria” recently being voted by the public as one of the top 10 greatest NZ songs of all time. Today you’ll hear 20,000 rugby fans singing in unison to “Why Does Love Do This To Me?” ‘Legend’ is a word suffering from unwarranted overuse syndrome these days, but its original intention is 100% intact when describing the affection the Kiwi public has for Jordan’s songs.
MC ‘THAT GUY’ – LEIGH HART - www.moontv.co.nz
Every great live stage needs and totally wild and crazy MC and Leigh Hart is That Guy at Southern Amp! Born in Greymouth, raised in the Andes of Peru, crafted at boarding school in Christchurch and a seasoned band member himself, Leigh made his TV debut on TV2’s Sports Café as roaming reporter ‘That Guy’. After covering 2 Olympic Games and a Rugby World Cup he moved onto produce his own Comedy show “Moon TV” and is now the face of Heller’s TV ads as well as playing in the Sports Café studio band. He’s back from travelling the world again to film a new series of Moon TV but jets into Christchurch for Southern Amp 08.

(Big top circus tent outside the Arena – Starts 12.15pm, Ends 11.00pm)
TIGER TONES - www.myspace.com/thetigertones
Tiger Tones make a very welcome return to Southern Amp on the NZ
Music Stage with their forceful live performance of intelligent pop
music that’s also intensely danceable...! A top 10 airplay act around the bNet, don't miss these dance punks do their thing.
THE VALVES - www.myspace.com/thevalvesband
The Valves are one of the South’s success stories of the last year.
A huge live resume now boasts support slots to Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne
and Whitesnake plus literally loads of their own gigs. This tight
kick-ass rock band deserve their slot on any major festival and we’re
glad to have them back.
TAINTED - www.myspace.com/taintednz
Tainted make no bones about being one of NZ’s best live metal bands. The hardworking Christchurch band’s long-awaited Second album “Carved and Created” will be finally be released in October and is expected to be one of the biggest NZ metal releases for quite a few years. Tainted will once again unleash their talent at Southern Amp on the NZ Music Stage this year.
CLAP CLAP RIOT - www.myspace.com/clapclapriot
A ferocious mix of dueling guitars, solid thumping drums and wild vocals, CCR are the MTV KickStart National winners and with edgy guitar tones they have had comparisons to bands like The Small Faces and Cut off Your Hands along with receiving praise from NZ media for their searing live shows. Southern Amp welcomes the boys home with open arms.
CAIRO KNIFE FIGHT - www.myspace.com/cairoknifefight
In their relatively short career, Cairo Knife Fight are rapidly establishing a reputation as one of the most absorbing and powerful live acts around. Recent gigs with performers like Motorcade, The Tutts and Anika Moa have seen them garner much interest from the music industry. A group of highly respected musicians in their own right, members of CKF feature on the recording and touring credits of Fat Freddy’s Drop, Weta, Solaa, Anika Moa, GoldenHorse and Dave Dobbyn, amongst others. Currently putting the finishing touches on their debut album, Cairo Knife Fight are a band not to be missed!!
LITTLE BUSHMAN - www.myspace.com/littlebushmanband
With a couple albums and plenty of gigs, Little Bushman give the
feeling they’ve finally got a foot in the door. After some excellent NZ
festival appearances over summer and a recent concert with the 40-piece
Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, Australia beckons later in the year.
DIMMER - http://www.myspace.com/dimmerband
Dimmer featuring the enigmatic Shayne Carter rose from the ashes of
Straitjacket Fits some time last century... their first album "I
Believe You Are A Star" was released in 2001 on Flying Nun which the NZ
Herald made their album of the year. With a brand new album currently
being recorded, Dimmer will play their only South Island show this year
at Southern Amp.
DIE DIE DIE - www.myspace.com/diediedienz
Die! Die! Die! are worthy of their Russ Meyer–like name… Hailing
from Dunedin and having toured the world over, this sickeningly tight
power-trio have little patience for pop concessions! Abrasive and
bare-bones, the band makes a lot out of a little… the result is
mind-numbingly satisfying!
FUR PATROL - www.myspace.com/furpatrol
Hailing from Wellington, Fur Patrol are now two thirds Melbourne
residents and one third back in Wellington again! With two albums, one
producing a huge NZ #1 single, and two EPs to date in Australasia since
forming in 1996, the new album, “Local Kid”, is due for release later
this year.
GOODNIGHT NURSE - www.myspace.com/goodnightnurse
Its been a major year for Goodnight Nurse, their hit single ‘The Night’
was played non-stop on radio and their 2nd studio album “Keep Me On
Your Side” debuted at #5 – They’ve won MTV Video Awards and their
MySpace profile is the most prolific in NZ, with over 2 million song plays to date!
THE EXILES - www.myspace.com/textiles
The Exiles seemingly came from nowhere when their debut single ‘The
One’ became the first independent NZ track to reach Top 30 on radio
play and digital sales alone. Their Big Day Out appearance this year
caught attention of The Herald who judged them the band with “Best Attitude”
MIDNIGHT YOUTH - www.myspace.com/themidnightyouth
Five-piece Auckland band fresh from recording their debut album
in New York have opened for the likes of Incubus, INXS and OK GO over
the past 2 years. With 3 top 40 NZ radio tracks under their belts, a
major record deal on the cards and strong support on music TV, this
young band are a live act worth watching out for!
AUTOZAMM - www.myspace.com/autozamm
Autozamm are carving out quite a niche as one of this country’s
fine live acts having supported Powderfinger, Shihad, Silverchair and
The Black Crowes recently. The release of their 2nd album “Drama Queen”
in March has seen them return to the live stage with a new sense of
high energy and their latest single ‘Closer To Home’ is fast becoming a
major hit on NZ radio.
AUDIO EMPIRE - www.myspace.com/audioempireband
Having just released their self-titled debut album, Auckland-based Audio Empire are now looking to expand on their success to date in the New Zealand rock scene. Winners of the The Rock / Myspace SAMP Band search they will open the festival.

(Mega-marquee outside the Arena – Starts 1.30pm, Ends 11.15pm)
POTBELLEEZ - www.myspace.com/thepotbelleez
Do you believe in fate? The Potbelleez certainly do! From being a couple of Irish tourists landing in Sydney, Australia in 2001/2 with not much more than a record bag to their name, Dave Goode and Jonny Sonic have become the hottest property in the Australian dance scene. If recent form is anything to go by, with “Don’t Hold Back” being the biggest dance hit of the year on both sides of the Tasman, all sorts of awards and being snapped up by Ministry Of Sound to mix the recent “Sessions” CD, the sky now seems the limit! With their full 4-piece live set up seen for the first time in NZ, The Potbelleez will close out the Ministry of Sound Stage.
THE ASTON SHUFFLE - www.myspace.com/theastonshuffle
Hailing from Australia’s capital Canberra, are a little electro, a little techno, but all house. In 2005 after being friends and associated production whores Vance Musgrove & Ross McGrath started their digital label project as a group effort to get their unreleased tunes out to the masses. Now under the influence of Ministry of Sound they are skyrocketing and heavily in demand for their white hot remixes… When the swing on their tunes hits the Ministry of Sound Stage at Southern Amp NZ dance fans will be very pleasantly surprised how hard it will be to keep their bodies from going retarded.
TIKI - www.myspace.com/tikitaane
Artist, Producer, Engineer Tiki spent the previous twelve years playing to the world as frontman for one of NZ’s most successful live exports, Salmonella Dub. Doubling as an audio engineer for some of the country’s finest acts as well, including Shapeshifter, Tiki’s unique gift for taking music into an innovative new realm has finally and totally deservedly resulted in a highly successful solo album “Past Present Future” in 2008 and a #1 single with “Always On My Mind”. Southern Amp pays much respect to Tiki’s achievements this year and looks forward to his captivating Acoustic/MC/DJ set on the Ministry of Sound stage.
CONCORD DAWN - www.myspace.com/weareconcorddawn
Concord Dawn have been making major waves in the world of electronic music for many years, dubbed the “NZ pioneers of Drum & Bass” and have released their distinctive sound on some of the world’s most distinctive dance labels and earned a fearsome reputation for their live performances from extensive touring around the world. GOODWILL - www.myspace.com/djgoodwill
Goodwill is not only one of Sydney’s finest DJ’s over the last 10 years, but also one of Australia’s! In recent years his production credits, including ‘Happenis’, ‘Go Away Baby’ & ‘Outta Control’, have made him Ministry Of Sound’s highest selling Australian artist and a producer in demand, resulting in him mixing the recent MOS “Sessions Five” CD with The Potbelleez. Goodwill returns to Southern Amp for the 2nd year running this year and is a DJ well worth checking out!
DJ INSOMNIAC - www.myspace.com/insomniacsoundalert
DJ Insomniac aka Willy Privett has been mixing for over 10 years and
has recently won Decknology 2008. Don't miss his stonking set opening the MOS stage.

(Marquee outside the Arena – Starts 12.15pm, Ends 7.00pm)
As the 4th Stage at Southern Amp 2008, this will be a daylight time only stage starting just after midday and finishing at 7pm. It will be a smaller stage but with full PA set up presented by CHART & RDU98.5FM. The stage will host ONLY Christchurch artists and will be set in a location to enable some of our fine singer/songwriter artists and folk/country/blues/r&b style artists, with a bit of synth and keyboards thrown in, showcasing the diversity of Christchurch music talent. The acts to appear on this stage will be:
THE DECEIVERS - www.myspace.com/thedeceiversnz
The Deceivers are 2008's UCSA Battle Of The Bands winners and with that title comes a spot on NZ Stage at Southern Amp. With influences from James Brown to The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, hi-energy funksters continue to amaze with their unique funk alternative sound and on-stage antics, these boys have huge potential hi-energy funksters so be in the tent early see them drop the funk!
MINISNAP - www.myspace.com/minisnap
Minisnap is a side project to The Bats featuring the songs of Kaye Woodward accompanied by fellow Bats members Paul Kean and Malcolm Grant along with Marcus Winstanley from The Undercurrents . Their latest album 'Bounce Around' has just been released in the US.
THE L.E.D’s - www.myspace.com/theleds
Welcome to L.E.D-land where synth2 + bass+ drums = pink electro pop. In 2007, The L.E.D.s were voted best new band and best video on undertheradar.co.nz, and The Gravy and Outrageous Fortune picked up a few of their choice tunes. This year, the synthpopsters celebrated the release of their 2nd album Still. Still is harder, better, faster, stronger than "...we are the L.E.D.s". Indeed it has more flavour. Think warm chocolate, pale blue ice, and pink lipgloss. The L.E.D.s are now nervously awaiting the reviews which have been good to date. Finally, The L.E.D.s want to see you singing away to their set at Southern Amp where they promise to push their electro envelope wider, deeper, and cooler...just for you!
THE KLAP - www.myspace.com/theklapmyspace
The 2008 Dux de Lux RoundUp winners The Klap have been called many things in their short but illustrious
history... venue doors which have often been slammed in their faces so many times have suddenly been opened. Christchurch's new favourite sons have been given the key to the city - well almost. See their unique brand of urban country folk.
OAKLEY ‘O.G.’ GRENELL - www.myspace.com/centralrecords
Oakley Grenell's music career has already been long and prolific. Being a Grenell he has a blood affiliation with music. Son of NZ Country Star- John Hore Grenell he grew up on the legendary Whitecliffs Ranch, host to the Whitecliffs Folk Festivals which are sited as a huge
influence on all the Grenell kids. O.G. is Oakley's solo production project - Dub, Reggae, Jungle, Drum'nBass, HipHop, Dancehall, 2 Step and Breaks…the best way to describe his style - Roots and Jazz based and influenced.
ED MUZIK - www.myspace.com/muziked
Ed Muzik = 2n x 4m + 1, where; n is equal to talent, m is equal to the number of keyboards and 1 is equal to 1. While part of Christchurch’s vibrant indie-electro scene, Ed Muzik’s musical influences lie more with international artists such as CSS, LCD Soundsystem and the Knife. Don’t miss out on the party when the Ed Muzik mobile disco rolls into the Southern Amp hood…
MC DIRT - www.tvnz.co.nz
From back country to backstage in true Southern style, Ashburton Bachelor of the Year and fifth generation high country shepherd Daniel Urquhart is also a rapper called ‘DIRT’ – no ordinary rapper though, kind of like a cross between The Man From Snowy River and Eminem! Beamed into countless thousands of homes through TVNZ’s 20/20 program recently, Daniel practices his unique urban sound, atop his trusty steed to a flock of between 1 and 1000 ‘sheep’ but he's about to take his talents to the mass public for the very first time on the Christchurch Music Stage as Southern Amp gives Dirt his first major break. "My homies are
my dogs"- Dirt must be the only rapper in the world that can actually mean that literally! Something not to be missed… Google “Rhymestone Cowboy 20/20” and see for yourself.
LINDON PUFFIN - www.myspace.com/lindonpuffin
Lyttelton based rockabilly folk punk Lindon Puffin, spends so much time on the road, it’d be more accurate to simply say he comes from NZ. In the past 18 months he’s toured the country thrice, promoting the release of his much heralded second album Show Pony, performed with his heroes Billy Bragg and Jack Black, had his epic road movie Figure 8000 screened numerous times on Sky TV’s Doco Channel and if that wasn’t enough, he’s just returned from a whirlwind global tour encompassing 12 countries & 36 cities! Renowned for his manic one-man live show, Puffin abuses a variety of instruments from guitar & piano to drums & ukulele. Walking a tightrope between music & comedy, he was particularly well received in Ireland & New York. Following the completion of his new album ‘Happy as Hell’, he’s reportedly heading back to give it a decent bash. Better catch him while you’ve still got a chance!
THE EASTERN - www.myspace.com/theeasternfamily
The Eastern promise to deliver a haymaker of footstomp folk, 12 round rock' n'roll, brokeheart blues, and old time harmony all with a little country kick. They bring… Backpacks full of road songs, battered acoustics and no name electrics, banjo and glockenspiel, mandolin, harmonica, foot stomps and old time singing, straight from the gut, the fist and the heart… Strummer/Jones, Morrissey/Marr, the Hanks Chinaski and Williams, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Devlin, Memphis and myth, the south from Gore to the Cargill.
HERA - www.myspace.com/herasings
Born in Iceland, based in Christchurch, Hera is one of the most promising female singer songwriters on the New Zealand stage today. An NZ On Air New Recording Artist funding recipient last year, the enchanting Hera has just released her new single & video "Feels So Good". Be prepared to be charmed, intrigued, moved & occasionally shocked by the music of HERA.
ANNEKA THWAITES - www.myspace.com/annekathwaites
Sincere, captivating and irresistibly melodic - Anneka Thwaites is an emerging Christchurch artist who has been turning heads since her appearance in the Christchurch Arts Festival last year. Her music is an eclectic mix that draws on elements of singer songwriter, folk, country and rock, paired with intimate vocals and reflective lyrics. She’s one to look out for, with her debut album In The Pink released in late September 2008.

CHART NZ MUSIC STAGE - (Applications closed 3rd Aug)
As plans continue to unfold for the staging of Southern Amp 2008 in November, CHART – The Christchurch Music Industry Trust (www.christchurchmusic.org.nz) is pleased to announce the application details for Christchurch artists to apply to perform at this year’s event on the newly created CHART NZ Music Stage.
This stage will be situated in a 1000 capacity circus tent marquee at the event on the grasslands surrounding Westpac Arena. This stage will be one of 3 separate stages at Southern Amp 2008 with full festival PA and lighting rig being supplied as per last year’s event.
What do you need?
Applications are invited from all genres of music but in this modern age of online music technology, we expect any act applying to AT LEAST have an active, happening and up to date MySpace profile site where we can listen to your music, see some visuals, check out where you are gigging, how many recent gigs you’ve played, read up about your history and check out who’s visiting your site and listening to your music, etc.
What we don’t need…
CHART and Southern Amp Limited WILL NOT ACCEPT PACKAGES CONTAINING DEMO CDs, VIDEOs, DVDs, PHOTOs, BIOGs (or any monetary bribes!) so please don’t waste your time or money sending huge portfolios by snail-mail! Basically our view is if you don’t have an established and regularly updated MySpace profile with a decent selection of recorded music on it + some cool video content then you are probably not serious enough about promoting your music and are probably not at the required development level yet to perform live at this huge event.
What we need…
There are a specific number of Christchurch artist slots available on the NZ Music Stage with approximately 50% of the stage also being allocated to other NZ artists from around the country based on merit and current activity. A lot of those slots have already been allocated, but all Christchurch slots will be decided via this application process.
Who qualifies?
For Christchurch artists to qualify, the Artist, or at least 50% of Band members, MUST be of Christchurch origin. It is not absolutely necessary (but preferable) to be still living in the region but it is important that the band’s ORIGINAL roots are firmly Christchurch based…!
What’s new this year?
In addition to the NZ Music Stage this year, there will also be a separate Busker’s Stage which ONLY Christchurch artists can apply for. Each artist will be paid a small basic fee but will be allowed to gather punter donations in guitar cases etc during their performance. Each slot will be an hour in length. Please specify which stage you are applying for when you submit your application.
When will decisions be made?
Please apply once only, chasing decisions from us will just confuse everybody and will probably annoy someone…! All decisions will be made by the end of August and we will notify all acts directly. Notifications will only be sent to successful applications.
Application Procedure & Deal
I know it all sounds pretty specific, rigid and boring but it has to be that way as we already know we are going to be inundated with applications for only a few available slots and we want to make sure it’s a fair process to all… Sign up to both databases at: www.christchurchmusic.org.nz & www.southernamp.co.nz for regular email updates on the South Island’s biggest multi stage music festival.
1. Send an email in the first instance to - info@christchurchmusic.org.nz – supplying contact details for ONE person representing the artist applying (please include name of act, your name, ONE email address & phone number) a MySpace OR Website address for each artist in question. Please title any emails “SAmp CHART NZ Music Stage”.
2. Appearance fee for all acts on the event is $750 + GST (or $750 less 20% withholding tax if not GST registered). This is non-negotiable.
3. Each successful act will receive one additional Southern Amp festival comp tickets per band/artist member. This is also non-negotiable.
4. There will be no backstage access for the above guests.
5. Stage plots & backline requirements are to be supplied by 1st October latest. Details of where to send these will be sent out separately to all acts accepted onto the bill.
6. All artists must supply their own instruments. Standard backline will be supplied by Southern Amp according to specs. If any specific backline is required, or band members prefer to provide their own backline, we will need to know by 1st October, as above.
7. Artists will be responsible for their own transport & accommodation. Parking will be supplied at the venue for a maximum of 2 artist vehicles. Catering & basic drinks rider including beer, energy drinks and bottled water will be supplied.
8. Backstage access is limited to band members + 1 tour manager, 1 x sound person and 1 stage technician ONLY. Monitor mix and lighting technician will be supplied at no extra charge to the artist. If a FOH sound desk operator is required please advise us on your stage plots as above by 1st October.
9. A standard lighting rig will be supplied, no specific additions to this will be permitted.
10. Merchandise sales will be permitted at the event, details of how this is to be controlled will be sent out separately to all acts once confirmed.
11. All submissions CLOSE on Sunday 3rd August 2008, no late applications will be considered.
12. All acts applying should preferably be APRA registered, if not we suggest you do so very soon, you will have the chance to earn extra money as part of the festival as songwriters from performance fees if you are registered…
(Note - The deal set out above is not negotiable under any circumstances).
We look forward to presenting the best of Christchurch’s talent at Southern Amp 2008.
