No Maybe About It: OpShop Ruled 2007

With more than 10,000 spins on New Zealand radio in 2007, there were no ifs, no buts or even maybes about it... OpShop ruled the airwaves this year. Maybe, from the ex-pat Christchurch band's Second Hand Planet album, tops this year's RadioScope End of Year charts by a healthy margin, the only song to break the 10,000-play barrier this year, based on the airplay logs of every major contemporary music station in New Zealand.

Underlining the cross-format success of the song, Maybe was the most-played track on both Pop radio and Rock radio formats in 2007, and came in at #3 on the Adult-Contemporary list. Following its service to radio in the first week of February, it quickly jumped to the top of playlists, spending 12 weeks at #1 on the RadioScope100 Chart and breaking the previous record of nine weeks for the longest-running #1 held by Brooke Fraser.

Not that Brooke did too badly in the airplay stakes in 2007 either. Shadowfeet was the second most-played song of the year, spending three weeks at #1 on the RadioScope100 and becoming a staple feature of Pop, Adult-Contemporary and, most particularly, Easy playlists. Shadowfeet was the third most-played song of the year on Easy Listening radio, just one of the three tracks she had in the year's Top20 in that format.

On Urban radio, Ne-Yo ruled the roost with Because Of You. Adult-Contemporary radio thrashed newcomer Mika's debut release Grace Kelly, while Canadian crooner Michael Buble dominated Easy radio with Everything.

As always, the b.net stations favoured the best in homegrown produce. The Brunettes were to the fore once again with the #2 (Her Hairagami Set) and #4 (B.A.B.Y.) most-played songs on Alt radio in 2007. However, it was another local collective that scored the top spot, The Phoenix Foundation with Bright Grey.
