18th August 2008
Close to 100 applicants from around the Canterbury region and a few more from around the country meant that this year’s decision process for Christchurch acts to play at Southern Amp 2008 took a little longer than anticipated. After a long an painstaking process, this is how we have worked things out:
With an expanded lineup for 2008 there were fewer slots available to Christchurch acts for this stage which lends itself more to the alternative funk/rock genres. This stage was also intended for local acts that have something ‘happening’ on a wider NZ scale than just local Christchurch interest, either music TV exposure, network radio play, music mag or newspaper features, forthcoming and/or anticipated album releases, etc. The Christchurch acts to appear on this stage are:
THE VALVES
CLAP CLAP RIOT
TIGER TONES
CAIRO KNIFE FIGHT
TAINTED
THE DECEIVERS
Each of these acts have that ‘something happening’ factor. The Deceivers were winners of UCSA’s Battle of the Bands earlier this year for which part of the prize was opening the NZ Stage.
As the 4th Stage at Southern Amp 2008, this will be a daylight time only stage starting just after midday and finishing at 7pm. It will be a smaller stage but with full PA set up presented by CHART & RDU98.5FM. The stage will host ONLY Christchurch artists and will be set in a location to enable some of our fine singer/songwriter artists and folk/country/blues/r&b style artists, with a bit of synth and keyboards thrown in, showcasing the diversity of Christchurch music talent. The acts to appear on this stage will be:
MINISNAP
THE L.E.D’s
LINDON PUFFIN
OAKLEY ‘OG’ GRENELL
THE EASTERN
HERA
ED MUZIK
ANNEKA THWAITES
We are holding TWO FINAL slots open for the winners of the Dux de Lux RounDUp band competition and the winner of the RDU98.5FM ‘Decknology’ DJ competition next month. In previous years both these talent searches have discovered amazing acts that go on to do great things (Tiger Tones, Bang Bang Eche, etc).
If you have missed out in this final selection process, we’re sorry we couldn’t accommodate everyone, our advice is to get your entries in for RounDUp and Decknology to get a 2nd shot of making the event. Entries close on August 31st.
Thanks to everyone who applied, Southern Amp & CHART say congrats to all those above and sorry to everyone else that we can’t supply a stage to have you all on…!!! Hope to see you at Westpac Arena Festival Park on Sunday 9th November. It’s gonna be a big one!
