The Red Panda Charitable Trust is a collective of youth leaders and musicians who have come together to establish a network which enhances the lot for young people in Christchurch who have an affinity with the alternative live music scene.

The concept was born out of informal discussions at the Christchurch Youth Council planning days ( it was Gloria, Netta and John over headaches and lunch) and then gained momentum after a community meeting attended by band members and other young people studying music or in related fields. The resolve of the group was strengthened by recommendations held at a recent youth conference held in Christchurch “Moving On from Edgeware – Youth Searching For Solutions” which made calls for enhanced provision of credible and socially attractive social events for young people in the city.

The Red Panda formed a relationship with White Elephant Trust, another youth network and leadership incubator to affect affirmative action, harnessing the strengths and resources of the alternative music scene to apply to meeting the entertainment and developmental needs of young people in Christchurch.

United by common interests and musical talents the Red Panda network is committed to the support of young emerging musicians within the indie / rock / alternative scene with a specific focus on

1. Promotion of quality safe events
2. Promote the positive development of the groups members ensuring their strong connection and contribution to the community as leaders and valued participants in community activities
3. Gathering resources and equipment to make available to young people engaged
4. Establishing facilities which cater for the needs of the group in terms of practice space, performance venue and social hub

The group will strengthen the ability of the wider community to engage this sector of the youth community, allowing strengthened communication and effectiveness of wider community campaigns targeted at this group.

Red Panda is based at 1 Bedford Row Christchurch alongside the White Elephant Trust and a group of other youth services.

Members of the group form various action committees where they tailor key responses to the needs of their member group and youth sector. Presently the group is focusing on two strategic action points, both of which were put forward by the recent youth conference “Edgeware – Moving Forward” these being

* Red Panda Events – contributing to the provision of youth events in Christchurch
* Red Panda Venue – planning to meet the call by young people for an inner city venue!
