Jonathon Tressler is an established drummer of 20 years experience and has been established in his full time teaching career for the past 10 years. A graduate of both the Christchurch Jazz School and Christchurch Teacher’s College Jonathon has the qualifications to back up his practical experience. He is employed as a full time Itinerant Teacher by the Ministry of Education, currently teaching in 7 secondary schools in Canterbury. He also has experience of teaching primary and intermediate aged students, teaching in public and private education establishments, as well as his own private teaching studio.

Jonathon is passionate about quality drum kit education for New Zealand students. This passion led him to the UK in 1999 to sit the Rock School Examinations (not then available in NZ). While on this quest he met Drumsense founder Colin Woolway, and their connection led to Jonathon establishing the Drumsense programme in NZ. As managing director of Drumsense he established a national network of drum teachers and gained sponsorship from the Rockshop. Recently he resigned from this position to focus on his growing private teaching studio situated in central Christchurch. Over the past 7 years he has trained and mentored many drum teachers in the Drumsense programme and held seminars around NZ.

Jonathon is currently playing in the Christchurch rock band ‘British Racing Green’. The band is currently in the process of recording their first self titled album and hopes to start promoting it early next year.

I started learning Drums/Percussion at the age of 7 from Brett Painter (Principal Percussionist Christchurch Symphony) at the Christchurch School of Music (CSM). While at CSM I gained valuable experience, skills and technical ability: Playing with orchestras, brass bands, symphonic bands and percussion groups. During high school I continued with private lessons and got to work with the Christchurch Youth Symphonic band, the Christchurch Youth Orchestra, the Christchurch Symphony and began to “branch out” in other areas. I played in various rock bands and shows (including Jesus Christ Superstar) gaining valuable experience in areas outside of the Classical world.

For the last 10 (or so) years I have focused mainly on Drum-kit. Continuing study with Brett Painter but also studying at the Christchurch Jazz School.

I have also played in church since the age of 13. I attribute this as being some of the best experience I have gained. It was there I learnt how to truly play with dynamics, sensitivity, emotion, and many different combinations of people.

During 2001 I toured New Zealand with an acoustic rock band for 7 months and in 2002 we spent 2 months touring in America. During these tours I clocked up over 130 shows and close to 30,000kms!

I was a founding member of Pandemonium (a 6 piece Percussion act) and still continue to play with them to this day. I also currently play in Satellite (a rock band) the south island of NZ’s most well known band in the Christian music scene.

Check us out at (www.myspace.com/satellitenz). We are currently recording our 5th full length album (2nd for me with them.)

I have been teaching on and off for 8 years. 2007 is my 3rd year teaching full time. It is also my 3rd year using the Drumsense program and am finding it to be a very good program with solid concepts.

With an avid interest in music I was first drawn to playing drums while living in Queenstown at the age of 11. Six years later I relocated to Christchurch City with a new lease on life and a strong will to really pursue the drums. I first took up private lessons studying basic rudiments while also studying Music at school. Stepping forward I then joined the school band, which exposed me to live musical performances, which included entering Smokefree Rockquest. With my dedication and study I eventually achieved a certificate in HSC Music.

14 years have passed since then and in that time I have been in numerous bands that have endured rigorous touring and countless gigs. Also in this time I have studied Jazz part-time and have entered the studio on several occasions to record albums.
To this day I play in two extreme music orientated bands and have taken on the Drumsense methodology into a fulltime teaching business under the tutelage of Jono Tressler.

Music has always been an important part of my life and I enjoy being able to teach and encourage others to learn.
I also recommend the Drumsense programme to any up and coming tutor, and to any students who are wanting lessons…..find a tutor who teaches Drumsense.

I have been playing drums for over 15 years and have taught drums for eight years. I have a background in horticulture and have trained as a secondary teacher teaching mainly Social Sciences. I taught in the classroom for five years before I made a serious commitment to music teaching.

I have played in rock bands, jazz bands and musicals. Currently I play in a local jazz big band and intend to find more playing opportunities as time spent juggling family, home and work commitments permits.
