27th June 2008
The CPIT Jazz School is offering a variety of part-time courses throughout 2008 from Jazz History, Sound engineering, Music software to Rock & Pop History and Appreciation...
Jazz History: Blue Tunes
Tutor: Neil Pickard
PTJZ007-08A: 5 May – 16 June
Mondays, 5.30-7pm;
$66.50
These sessions will be devoted to the study of major jazz tunes the
titles of which have the word ‘BLUE’ (or shades of) in them. This
predilection for using the colour as a means of creating a Tin Pan Alley
‘Hit’ certainly seems to have become a reality as there are numerous
standards in that vein. We will look at the psychology behind the
concept and the lyrics that went towards enshrining this device in
popular jazz songs.
Jazz History: Nat ‘King’ Cole
Tutor: Neil Pickard
PTJZ008-08A: 23 June – 11 August
Mondays, 5.30-7pm;
$66.50
Nat ‘King’ Cole was both a gifted pianist who admired many of the
great early jazz players and was particularly inspired by the piano
playing of Earl ‘Fatha’ Hines who had brought the art of piano
improvisation to a whole new level. Nat Cole took up the trio format,
established by Art Tatum, and popularised it to the extent that the
great Oscar Peterson modelled himself in turn on Cole including rare
vocals done in 1954.
Jazz History: Jazz Drummers
Tutor: Neil Pickard
PTJZ009-08A: 18 August – 22 September
Mondays, 5.30-7pm;
$66.50
This course is not to be regarded as highlighting ‘skin thrashers’ but
a closer look at the ‘engine room’ of jazz ensembles of all types. The
drummer’s role was to knit with bass and piano (and later guitar) to
provide the heartbeat and the pulse of the group. Jazz history traces
many outstanding drummers from Dodds to DeJohnette to describe
a century of timekeeping. Our focus will be on the major ‘movers and
shakers’.

Cubase© is a well established creative software package that allows the
user to integrate various audio and midi musical elements. This type
of software is essential in today’s music production industry, and skills
developed in this course will give musicians the opportunity to take
control of their own creativity by manipulating songs/compositions,
arrangements, sounds and production techniques. Some keyboard
(piano) skills are an advantage.
Music Software – Sibelius©

PTJZ004-08A: 22 May – 26 June or
PTJZ004-08B: 7 August – 11 September
Thursdays, 6-7.30pm;
$83.90
Sibelius© has established itself as the software of choice for the creation
of notated scores and parts. Used worldwide by composers and
arrangers, its ease of use and intuitive design enable the musician to
quickly and effectively notate music from simple single line charts to
complex orchestral scores. This course introduces users to score layout,
parts and instrumentation, and the notation of chords, chord symbols,
lyrics, articulation and dynamics.
Jazz Language 1

PTJZ005-08B: 4 August – 8 September
Mondays, 6-7.30pm
$83.90
Designed for those for whom jazz theory is a mystery, this course seeks
to establish and explore the techniques and theory fundamental to
jazz improvisation. By integrating practical aural skills and theoretical
concepts, you can gain an insight into how jazz musicians are able to
improvise at sight on chord changes, using a learnt approach to diatonic
harmony, along with blues stylistics and other devices.
This course is ideally taken with Jazz Ensemble as a practical outlet,
and is best suited to people with some tonal instrumental or vocal
experience.
