• YMDT is established to carry out, primarily within the South Island's West Coast region, the following aims:
• To raise awareness of the value of music in the lives of young people.
• To promote the positive aspects of music as a self development tool for young people to achieve their best.
• To advocate to improve the musical environment of the West Coast.
• To support young people in their quest for musical expression for the purpose of performance and self development.
• To facilitate training and educational opportunities and resources for young people in all aspects of musical development.
• To mentor groups and individuals wishing to develop their musical skills.
• To do anything else within New Zealand that will advance any of these aims.
